As Trump and his Republican loyalists attack wildlife in our national parks and waterways, I am pleased to receive another 100% from Defenders of Wildlife. We must continue to fight for biodiversity protections as Republicans seek to sell out our planet.
The hundreds of messages I have received on this issue demonstrate that Austin, the only place I have ever called home, will never surrender. We stand together, fighting for every student’s right to succeed and against this illegal power grab. 10/10
Because the Department of Education was established by statute enacted by Congress, Trump has no authority to shut it down by Executive Order. This is another attempt to overwhelm and wear down the American people. 9/10
Trump's agenda, supported by Musk & Gov Abbott, is simple: starve our public schools—the foundation of our democracy—of resources that create well-informed citizens. Why? So it’s easier to sell their backward beliefs, peddle “alternative facts,” & secure a future where ignorance is a weapon. 8/10
President Trump may claim to put America first, but this latest move makes it painfully clear: he is putting us last. In Texas alone, the Department provides over $580 million to support our workforce. 6/10
This isn’t just about policy—it’s about priorities. Abbott’s and Trump’s actions cater to the demands of billionaire donors to redirect these funds to finance private academies and trillions in tax breaks. 5/10
It’s so appropriate that Governor Abbott has joined President Trump for this announcement since both are undermining public education. Their attacks on federal support for education are furthered by their promotion of state and federal voucher schemes. 4/10
As a product of Austin public schools myself and as a father and grandfather of successful AISD students, I know the value dedicated educators bring to our community. Our public schools are vital for both individual opportunity and our continued economic promise. 3/10
This unlawful action doesn’t just skirt Congressional authority—it endangers support for the most vulnerable students/schools in Texas: 700,000 students w/disabilities, $140 million for bilingual learners & $1.8 billion in funding for Title I schools that serve over 3.6 million students. 2/10
Today, Trump signed an Executive Order directing Secretary McMahon to take all necessary steps to dismantle the Department of Education, an agency that serves over 5.6 million students across 9,000 Texas K-12 schools. 1/10
Trump/Musk eliminated a program tracking nearly 35,000 Ukrainian children kidnapped by Russia, calling it a “waste.” I'm demanding the Trump Admin, which has shown its willingness to separate children from families, reverse course and restore this program to help Ukrainians bring their kids home.
Trump's slash-and-burn approach to mass firings has put more military veterans out of a job than any other president in American history. Cutting our top performers in missile defense, healthcare, and other positions makes us less healthy and secure.
Joining Liberty Ukraine Executive Director Tonya Levchuk and Ukrainian combat veteran and volunteer Constantantine Kalinovskiy, I again spoke in support of Ukraine at Saengerrunde Hall in Austin. Support for Ukraine is an investment in America's safety and security & that of the entire free world.
The Social Security Administration was at a 50-year staffing low before Trump cuts. Now he wants to force Americans to go IN PERSON for assistance even as he fires thousands of workers/closes offices. Will any Republican stand up for Americans who earned this benefit, paying in month after month?
Trump’s anti-democratic call for impeachment of a judge he disagrees with corrodes our system of checks and balances. While Chief Justice Robert’s statement is welcome, what counts is whether SCOTUS upholds lower court decisions on the merits rejecting Trump’s unconstitutional and unlawful actions.
Sixty-six million seniors and individuals with disabilities rely on Medicare. Yet, coverage continues to be severely limited for dental, vision and hearing. @sanders.senate.gov and I want to fix that. Expanding Medicare benefits moves us closer to assuring dignity and health for all.
The GOP's plan for long-term care is to take the nurses out of nursing homes. To help pay for more tax breaks for billionaires, they want to repeal minimum nurse staffing standards and cut nearly $1T in spending for home health aides, nursing home stays & other essential care. I oppose their plan.
Hurricane season is approaching, and Republicans think it's smart to axe 20% of the workforce responsible for forecasting & tracking extreme weather. It may not seem like a big deal to some, but having access to free, accurate & timely forecasts can save lives and money from weather-related damage.
