My office was contacted by a domestic violence organization that usually serves over 2,000 domestic and sexual violence survivors every year. If Trump's cuts continue, they may have to fire staff and close their legal services. Trump's actions are leaving vulnerable people without resources.
This morning, I talked with Jim Acosta about Donald Trump's unconstitutional freeze of federal funding, including cutting off funding to programs that feed hungry children. Donald Trump is penalizing children to make a political point.
Transgender Americans in the military have volunteered to serve our nation. It is unacceptable and offensive to refuse them solely on the basis of their gender. Trump's decisions are weakening our military readiness while his foreign policy decisions threaten our national security.
One of the things that makes the United States the greatest nation on Earth is the basic promise that if you are born in America, you are an American. Period.
On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we remember the six million Jewish people who were killed during the Holocaust. As we remember, we must continue our fight against antisemitism and ensure that the horrors of the Holocaust are never minimized or forgotten. #NeverAgain
Two days ago, President Trump authorized ICE and CBP to target sensitive locations like schools and churches. Today, ICE tried to enter a Chicago elementary school but was denied entry. The admin's goal is to sow fear and chaos, even for innocent children. We must protect them.
President Trump promised he would focus on lowering costs, not criminalizing abortion. But days into Trump’s term, Republicans already pushed a bill that would interfere in family medical decisions and jail doctors and nurses who provide reproductive health care.
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I joined Nourishing Hope in Lakeview for a day of service. It was an honor to help give back to my home community and to work alongside volunteers who are so dedicated to serving their neighbors.
If Republicans truly want to address crime rates or fix our broken immigration system, they should take up gun violence prevention bills or finally tackle comprehensive immigration reform.
Today, I once again voted against the Laken Riley Act, legislation that purports to solve an issue that doesn't exist. There are already processes in place to detain immigrants who commit crimes. This bill's only purpose is to spread fear and stoke xenophobia.
Overturning #RoevWade left millions without access to essential health care. I'm proud to stand with the @ReproCaucus in the fight to re-establish a nationwide right to abortion, enshrine the protections of Roe into law, and safeguard #ReproductiveFreedom for all.
January 6, was a dark day in our nation; one where the future of our democracy stood on a knife’s edge. Donald Trump’s pardoning of the traitors responsible sends a message that violent assault on our democracy is not just tolerated but rewarded.
Se que en muchos miembros de la comunidad existe incertidumbre acerca de las redadas migratorias en Chicago. Hasta este momento no está confirmada la información y la mejor manera de estar preparado es que “conozca sus derechos”.
I’m at Nourishing Hope in Lakeview this morning helping distribute groceries to food insecure members of our community, braving the cold with some incredible volunteers. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be today.
For over 50 years Nourishing Hope has served my home community of Lakeview. Following the example of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. I am happy to be spending today with my neighbors caring for our community and focusing on the things that matter most to them and their families.
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we honor Dr. King by continuing his fight for equality and justice for all. As we celebrate his life, may we build upon his legacy and continue our work toward a more perfect union.
