Charles E. Schumer

Charles Ellis Schumer is an American politician serving as the senior United States senator from New York, a seat he has held since 1999. A member of the Democratic Party, he has led the Senate Democratic Caucus since 2017 and served as Senate Majority Leader from 2021 to 2025. He has served two stints as Senate minority leader, from 2017 to 2021 and since 2025. He became New York's senior senator in 2001, upon Daniel Patrick Moynihan's retirement. Elected to a fifth term in 2022, Schumer surpassed Moynihan and Jacob K. Javits as the longest-serving U.S. senator from New York. He is the dean of New York's congressional delegation.

President-Elect Donald Trump has said that he wants to do ‘something about the Dreamers’ and that he will work with Democrats on a plan, something I will take him up on while he is in office.
Nearly five years ago the highest court in the land ruled in favor of Dreamers, folks who have been in this country since childhood and are looking for nothing more than to fulfill their own American Dream in the only country they have ever called home.
I will do everything I can to remove the entire SALT cap tax and never let a new proposal that to impose the SALT cap on businesses, small and large, to be put into effect.
There is no scenario under God’s green Earth that New York taxpayers will ever accept another unfair SALT cap like the House Freedom Caucus proposes. They’ve suffered long enough at the hands of broken Republican tax policies.
But now instead of ensuring New Yorkers we will get SALT back, the House Freedom Caucus wants to impose a whole new round of SALT caps. They want to place new SALT caps on New York businesses, small and large, and want to push an increase in the SALT tax on New Yorkers.
In the fall, Donald Trump went to Long Island, New York, and claimed he would “get SALT back.” That’s good news, very good news, because it was precisely Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans who created the SALT cap to begin with.
I told John Ratcliffe that I thought it would be best if he told President-elect Trump that Tulsi Gabbard should not have the job. His answers were insufficient.
I told John Ratcliffe about my grave concerns regarding the nomination of Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence because I believe her tenure could be colossally disruptive to our intelligence agencies, where so many thousands work so hard and many risk their lives to protect us.
I met with John Ratcliffe, the President-elect’s nominee for CIA Director. I raised my concerns about some of his positions, and challenged him to be rock-ribbed when it comes to the integrity of the CIA, a place where facts, not lies, must prevail, for the security of America.
It’s clear from this week’s Cabinet hearings: Trump is not building a Cabinet to serve the American people. He's building a Cabinet to serve special, powerful interests.
