I was glad to join the Illinois Municipal League board meeting today to speak with mayors about our shared work on behalf of our constituents. As we face increasing uncertainty about federal funding, I will always fight to ensure #IL13 receives the resources it deserves.
Today we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act! This landmark law enshrined the rights of folks with disabilities – a huge step forward in building a nation that is inclusive and accessible to all.
Since taking office, the Trump administration has launched relentless attacks on the LGBTQ+ community – including ending the 988 lifeline for LGBTQ+ youth. I visited Uniting Pride in Champaign today to talk about ways we can fight back and keep uplifting our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors.
Today, I held a House Veterans Affairs Committee field hearing in Urbana where we talked about the unique challenges rural veterans face accessing the care and benefits they’ve earned. Thank you to Congressman Tom Barrett and all our witnesses for participating in this important conversation!
After pushing for this schedule change, it’s great to see the early morning American Airlines flight from Springfield to Chicago returning to the Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport this fall! This new route will support local business, grow our economy, and connect our region with more opportunities.
I had the chance to tour the air traffic control tower at Lambert Airport with @repwesleybellmo.bsky.social! It was great to meet with NATCA members and hear about their work keeping the flying public safe, especially as federal employees face staffing challenges in the new administration.
Before I head back to Illinois for our August district work period, I wanted to recap all the ways President Trump and Republicans in Congress have abandoned working families this summer ⬇️
It’s been 16 years since the last increase in the federal minimum wage – that’s unacceptable. It’s time for every worker in America to be paid what they deserve for a hard day’s work. It’s time to raise the wage.
I’m excited to announce that three of my bills passed out of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee! Our veterans should be given every tool they need to succeed in civilian life – and these pieces of legislation are designed to do just that.
This week, @laborcaucus.house.gov held a meeting with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union International President Bobby Olvera Jr. The 40,000 members of the ILWU are the backbone of America’s supply chain, and we had a great conversation today about how we can support them in Congress.
Last summer, the Supreme Court issued an unprecedented decision shielding the president from criminal prosecution. In America – where all are created equal – no one is above the law. I joined @Morelle.house.gov to introduce a constitutional amendment to end absolute immunity for presidents.
Just over a year ago, SCOTUS handed down a disastrous ruling giving presidents absolute immunity from criminal prosecution. Today, I reintroduced my constitutional amendment to make sure presidents are held accountable under the law.
The numbers are in. According to experts at the nonpartisan CBO, the Trump tax package will: ❌Kick 10 MILLION Americans off their health insurance 📈Add $3.4 TRILLION to the national debt 💰Hand out massive tax breaks to billionaires It’s a big, ugly ripoff of working families.
Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, we’ve seen the devastating impacts of extreme abortion bans in states across the country: women being denied lifesaving care and doctors living in fear. We need to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to restore reproductive rights for all.
Last week, Republicans in Congress greenlit President Trump’s cuts to local broadcasting, lifesaving international aid, and other important programs. It’s a complete abdication of Congress’ power to direct spending and a signal to Trump that there are no checks on his power. Shameful.
🚨BIG NEWS – My Improving Veterans Experience Act just passed the House! It was great to work with @juliabrownley.house.gov and @repmcgarvey.bsky.social on this bill to ensure veteran feedback stays at the heart of VA’s operations.
We’re facing some of the hottest temperatures on record this summer and it’s absolutely unacceptable that American workers have no legal protection against excessive heat. I’m proud to join @chu.house.gov in introducing a bill to create a federal standard to keep workers safe & healthy on the job.
Last week, I convened farmers, food banks, and other folks from the food and ag sectors to talk about threats to food access in Central and Southern Illinois. Hunger isn’t inevitable – and I will keep pushing for policies that help more people get more food on the table, not less.
