I’m deferring my pay for the duration of the shutdown.
Thousands of people in Memphis & TN9 are going to be impacted—from federal employees and servicemembers to contractors & middle-class families who keep our city running.
If they aren't getting paid because of the GOP shutdown, neither will I.
On the case now and for decades standing up and delivering for my constituents

Republicans control the White House, Senate & House. They set this shutdown deadline, and then jammed through the Big Ugly Bill gutting SNAP, Medicaid & ACA tax credits to enrich billionaires.
Now they need Dems and won't negotiate—and blocked us from offering an alternative.
It's a GOP shutdown.

The long-term solution to crime is better schools, more job opportunities, more mental health resources, and real law enforcement partnerships. Not the National Guard.
Trump's deployment won't solve crime. The real concern is it's a cover for ICE to rip good, hardworking people from our community.

I’ll be on @cnn.com at 9:20am CT to discuss why sending the National Guard into Memphis is the wrong approach.
Memphis deserves real investment to improve education and job opportunities, and real law enforcement partnerships. Not political stunts.
Former interim Mayor & longest-serving Memphis councilman Myron Lowery lived a life of service with integrity & grace. Myron and I supported each other through elections, but more important was our 50-year friendship. I’ll miss him. Condolences to Mary, Mickell, and his family. A life well lived.
www.cnn.com/2025/09/27/p... hope this talk is just hypertrophy and not about lethality. As the war president, he sounds like he’ll be killing American protesters. God help us.!
This is why I voted against the GOP’s Big "Ugly” Bill — and why Democrats won’t support a CR that locks in these health care cuts.
Memphis is being hurt by this legislation as much if not more than any other district in America.
Trump forced out a respected Republican US Attorney who wouldn't charge James Comey, and replaced him with a real estate lawyer with no criminal law experience—but who knew how to say, "Yes sir, Mr. Trump."
This isn't about justice. It's about Trump using the DOJ to settle scores & silence critics.

When governments start threatening the press and silencing critics, freedom and democracy are in danger.
History shows where that road leads.

Today, Ales Bialiatski celebrates his 63rd birthday in a Belarusian prison. He is serving a 10-year sentence on politically motivated charges for his work on human rights. Belarus must release him immediately & unconditionally.
@repcohen.bsky.social is his #DefendingFreedoms advocate.

Pope Leo warned when wealth is prized above values, society is in trouble. He’s right. Musk chasing a trillion—and a President cashing in on crypto—prove how warped it’s become.
Billionaires don’t pay a fair share in taxes. That’s why @wyden.senate.gov & I introduced the Billionaire Income Tax Act.

Trump and his FCC chairman Carr are trying to control the media and abridge free speech. Their authoritarian actions must stop.
CBS and ABC have capitulated. Let’s hope NBC stands up!
Trump has asked them to fire Seth Myers and Jimmy Fallon.
Please don’t!

Trump Asks Supreme Court to Allow Removal of Fed Governor www.nytimes.com/2025/09/18/u... You know there’s a problem in the relationship with the Supreme Court and Trump‘s lawyers when they sign their pleading, “who’s your daddy?”

Air travel is too vital to be held hostage to shutdown politics. The Aviation Funding Stability Act I introduced today keeps the FAA running even in a shutdown — so planes stay in the air, inspections continue, and workers get paid.
Shutdowns can't be allowed to ground safety or America's economy.
