Refusing to permit questioning of Musk & defeating my resolution demanding accountability from DOGE, Republicans continue their “Don’t Know & Don’t Care” approach. Reining in waste is fine, but GOP is giving Musk near free rein to invade your tax, employment, Social Security & other private data.
Funding our government is an essential duty of Congress, but the President must respect the power of the purse and spend the funds we approve. I voted NO on today’s continuing resolution because a wannabe tyrant cannot be left unchecked.
Arresting, detaining, and seeking to deport Mahmoud Khalil for exercising his constitutional right to free speech creates a pervasive atmosphere of fear and intimidation. You don’t have to agree with his speech to recognize the growing danger engulfing our country. (2/2)
Muzzling those with whom he disagrees, just like his efforts to muzzle the press—the “enemy of the people.” Trump targets first those with seemingly the least political power, but eventually, he would come for all who oppose his tyranny. (1/2) abcnews.go.com/US/ice-arres...
Trump golf weekends’ cost to taxpayers hits $18.2 million, as he warns Americans to prepare for the pain from his tariff wars and firing so many at Social Security Administration, HHS (Medicare/Medicaid), Education, VA, National Park Service. Here is a source of real waste, fraud, and abuse to cut.
Spoke to CBS Austin about Trump/Musk's FAA layoffs making our community less safe. The abrupt firing of highly talented public servants across the government, many of whom are veterans, will degrade service.
Trump’s Department of Injustice has decided his disgraceful pardons of Jan. 6 rioters cover their additional egregious crimes. His phony claims to Congress that he believes criminals should be behind bars conflict with his efforts to put Jan. 6 criminals back onto the streets with illegal firearms.
Of the many Trump lies in his address, among the most troubling were those on Social Security, which automatically declines payments to anyone over the age of 115 and polices others. @usprogressives.bsky.social and I will always fight fraud and protect Americans from Trump and Musk's attacks.
Rebecca informed me that due to Trump/Musk's assault on our national park system, they are unable to hire new law enforcement and park rangers to ensure the safety of the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas. (2/2)
San Antonio, which I represented for about a decade, has so much that makes it special, including the Missions National Park I helped expand years ago. Pleased to chat with Rebecca Viagran, President & CEO of the South Texas Business Partnership, during the annual “SA to DC” trip. (1/2)
Trump/Musk and complicit GOP are determined to weaken Social Security by firing ~7k workers and closing regional offices. I joined Ways & Means colleagues to introduce bills to keep field offices open, protect sensitive info & demand Trump informs Congress about DOGE activity threatening benefits.
Trump and Musk are punishing veterans to pay for billionaire tax breaks. Austin veteran Daniel Santiago bravely served our country for 13 years before working at the IRS. Due to Trump's mass firings, he and his wife are now at risk of losing their home.
Trump and Musk's false claims about Social Security plants doubt in Americans' minds as GOP seeks slashing this earned benefit to give billionaires trillions in tax breaks. @pocan.house.gov, Rep. Maxwell Frost and I are fighting to protect the promise for you to retire with dignity and security.
I am excited to introduce the Protect Social Security and Medicare Act with @doggett.house.gov and Rep. Maxwell Frost. We all pay into these programs and are counting on them for essential healthcare and a dignified retirement. This bill will protect them.
I joined colleagues to highlight the many lies and imaginary numbers in Trump’s address. For example, Social Security makes payments to 72 million Americans each year, and less than 1% of those payments have ever been found to be improper (some were too small!). Watch my full speech:
Our compassion and humanity should always extend to animals. I'm pleased to receive another perfect 100+ score from the Humane World Action Fund for my legislative efforts to end animal cruelty and abuse. We've still got work to do, but I remain committed to protecting animal welfare.
