Trump wants a government shutdown.
His errand boy, Speaker Johnson, backed out of bipartisan legislation, which he had personally approved after months of negotiation.
Tonight, 38 Republicans voted against his bill.
What Republicans are beginning with Liz Cheney is an infection that can spread widely and rapidly to undermine our democracy. (3/3(
While I have multiple political disagreements with Liz, I admire her courage and her commitment to our Constitution. Trump insists that Liz, Chairman Bennie Thompson, and all members of the official House January 6th Committee “should go to jail.” (2/3)
Trump promised revenge on his opponents. Now House Republicans are joining as accomplices by issuing an outrageous report urging a criminal probe of Liz Cheney. There is no evidence that she committed any criminal offense, only that in doing her job responsibly, she offended Donald Trump. (1/3)
The Trump chaos begins.
With his last-minute demands, Trump has issued a directive to Republicans to reject the bipartisan agreement approved by House and Senate leaders, resulting in a government shutdown on Friday that will deny paychecks to millions, including our servicemembers.
Austin's air control tower needs more resources and support to safely manage our skies. Yet the FAA continues to fail to take meaningful action.
Until the FAA prioritizes expanding our controlled airspace and hiring more controllers, travelers are exposed to inadequate safety.
Congratulations to Texas native and @utaustin.bsky.social alumni Robert Rodriguez on the induction of his movie SPY KIDS into The Library of Congress National Film Registry!
Filmed in Austin, it now joins hundreds of other titles preserved in our national library for cultural significance.
Austin travelers are frequently experiencing flight delays because air traffic controllers are understaffed.
After the FAA told me our situation was "as bad as it gets," they fail to take meaningful action to staff up our control tower. I'll keep fighting for our safety.
We can only hope that should America find itself in a similar situation, the members of the president’s party would have the courage to choose democracy first. (2/2)
It is noteworthy that not only the South Korean president’s opponents but also dozens of members of his own party defended democracy by voting to impeach him over his blatant abuse of power in declaring martial law. (1/2)

From our NEW conversation with U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett: H.R. 9495, by its title an anti-terrorism bill, would actually give Donald Trump the power to label non-profits like the ACLU, the NAACP, and yes, Progress Texas, as terror organizations - and revoke our non-profit status. Pod: bit.ly/4gaqA4m
In Austin, athletics plays a large role in keeping our kids healthy and our communities engaged.
In recognition of Austin hosting the 55th National Athletics Directors Conference, I've joined a resolution to honor those who help students achieve their full potential.
Echoing the sentiment of an Austin airport traveler: safety is number one and we need enough air traffic controllers to ensure the job is done safely.
Despite FAA's misdirection toward weather delays, I continue pressuring for an expanded controlled air space and hiring more traffic controllers.
I joined the Slow Fashion Caucus to push for policies that reduce, repair, rewear and recycle textiles. Fits well with the thrifting movement.
Increasingly mass-produced, throwaway fast fashions with synthetic content fill landfills and pollute waterways.
Austin is the only place I've ever called home, and it's always a joy to have Texas Longhorns from the LBJ School visit my Washington office.
Led by Assistant Dean Trent Thurman, we had an inspiring discussion about their passion for service and the contributions all of us can make to progress.
Additional FAA delays can be expected associated with the nomination of a new administrator and securing Senate confirmation. (2/2)
Noteworthy that FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker, with whom I discussed on Monday safety concerns associated with a lack of air traffic controllers at Austin’s airport, announced he is resigning on January 20, only 13 months into his five-year term. (1/2)
The FAA cites outdated staffing numbers, including two controllers who left our airport last month and two medically disqualified controllers, claiming 33 are staffing AUS.
For over a year, I've pressed for more meaningful action, and I won't stop until we have a stronger margin of safety.
Pleased to meet with @utaustin.bsky.social Brumley Scholars to discuss global human rights, climate, and tax issues.
