It's a tragedy that Trump's sycophants apparently spent months at the NMAH and walked away more close-minded.   They've completely missed the purpose of the museum and have chosen to instead to try and enrage the American people as an excuse to rewrite history.
We need to defend our institutions, as historian Timothy Snyder has been arguing for years.   This means defending the values that should inform them, not just following along with whatever happens.
You make these critiques in an attempt to address them and strive towards that more perfect union.   I think of Bill Clinton's quote: “There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be cured by what is right with America.”   That is, unless you don't think there's anything wrong.
Yet I'd argue telling the truth about our history and addressing them head on are the very definition of patriotism.   As James Baldwin says: "I love America more than any other country in the world and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually."
Museums should be thought provoking and a place of reflection and different perspectives, not just a regurgitation of dates and myths.   But not in Trump's America.   He and his sycophants want a country in which everything is white-washed and our flaws conveniently omitted.
The NMAH is their next target.   The accusations lobbed at the institution hold that the story of America should be told from one simplified, "patriotic" perspective, as if the American people can't handle the truth.
From cultural institutions such as The Kennedy Center and the National Portrait Gallery, to entire agencies like HHS and countless others, Trump and Co. have shamelessly done anything and everything possible to bend institutions to their will or destroy them.
Never mind the irony for *anyone* working for the Trump administration to throw these accusations around.   One could argue rather easily that Trump's entire presidency has been about undermining faith in our country's institutions and ideals.
My bipartisan bill extends the same kind of support available for other VA benefits to the home loan program, giving veterans access to free, independent guidance when buying, refinancing, or fighting to stay in their homes.
Today, in what should have been a 9-0 vote, the Supreme Court didn’t just make the right decision, they made the only constitutional decision. Birthright citizenship has been fundamental to our nation’s economy, culture, and identity for more than 150 years.
A budget and what we choose to fund is a statement of our priorities.   Republicans prioritize billionaires, Democrats prioritize people who've fallen on hard times or need a little bit more help feeding their families.
Finally, it's important to remember that Republicans pushed through these cuts to  fund tax breaks for billionaires.   They decided it was more important to give billionaires *more* government handouts than help the people who really need it.
There are people who want to work but don't have the infrastructure or support - like reliable transportation - to do so.   Others who were previously receiving food assistance don't find out they're no longer eligible until the last minute, sending them scrambling.
