The wrinkle here is that they may have been right in never shipping it. There are huge security implications to building this product and the general response has been “¯\_(ツ)_/¯ user beware”, which Google can’t really get away with
This is probably the right decision in planning for the future - AI automation is transparently not going to be about manipulating a virtual cursor and browser - but it’s not great that Google never managed to ship this when it was still cutting edge
NEW: Google quietly shut down Project Mariner yesterday, the web-browsing AI agent it highlighted onstage last year at Google IO. I reported for WIRED, nearly 2 months ago, that Google had moved staffers off the Project Mariner team as it responded to OpenClaw-style agents.
They’ve entirely replaced the 5G people
Question for my fellow tech/AI/etc reporters here: How often do you get "tips" from people clearly suffering from AI psychosis? Strangers reaching out to tell you they've uncovered something secret and special and technical through an AI. I've had several via Grok. Yesterday my first Gemini.
today is monzo and equifax each agreeing that they should be reporting the same number for my credit score, and each telling me that what i need to do is contact the other and tell them that they're reporting the wrong number
