Trump’s One Big Ugly Bill creates permanent tax breaks for the rich at the expense of stripping Medicaid and SNAP benefits from millions of people. For Richmonders, the stakes are high.
I spoke with @rvamag.bsky.social about how cutting Medicaid will shift costs to everyone else.
Today is an opportunity to recommit to eradicating that dark legacy and ensuring our nation lives up to the ideals upon which it was founded.
We began to make progress addressing the lingering impact of over 300 years of slavery and Jim Crow, which did not go away with the wave of a magic wand.
Then the backlash came.
Five years ago today, the world watched in horror as Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck and back for over nine minutes, killing him as he called out for his mother. This forced the nation to reckon with the systemic racism and police brutality that Black Americans have endured for centuries.
The implications of the One Big Ugly Bill for Virginia are starting to unfold.
Take SNAP, for instance: the budget bill requires states to pay more in administrative costs and, for the first time, pay up to 25% of the benefit. For Virginia, that’s up to $450 million a year.
Congress is now in recess until June, and I will continue sounding the alarm about the devastating impact the One Big Ugly Bill will have on Virginia.
This week, Virginia lost one of its most stalwart fighters in the Congressional delegation and Trump’s One Big Ugly Bill made its way through the House to give tax breaks to the wealthiest few by stripping health care and food assistance from those who need it most.
Trump’s back to threatening new tariffs on the European Union and Apple — sinking the stock market in the process.
Continued tariff uncertainty wreaks havoc on our economy and business planning and stability — especially for small businesses. And new tariffs will cause more prices to go up.

I joined @protectourcare.org to speak out against the threats to Medicaid expansion in Virginia — and warn of the dire impact to our Commonwealth if the Congressional Republicans successfully enact the largest Medicaid cuts in history.
Watch 13News Now’s coverage of the event.
I am horrified and saddened by the murder of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim at the Capital Jewish Museum. May their memories be a blessing.
Everyone deserves to feel safe practicing their religion and celebrating their culture. We must root out antisemitism and hatred in all its forms.

"Never before in recent history has a group of lawmakers so deliberately and knowingly worked to inflict so much extreme devastation and financial burden on working people in America."

Instead of addressing those rising costs, House Republicans chose to nickel and dime our nation’s most vulnerable and gut the programs children, seniors, veterans, and low-income communities rely upon to survive — all to make room in the budget for tax cuts for the wealthiest in this country.
This morning, House Republicans passed their big bad billionaire bonus — a budget that betrays the American people.
Too many people find it harder and harder to put food on the table, afford quality health care, and keep a roof over their heads.
We’re in hour two of debating one Big Ugly Bill that kicks millions of Americans off their health insurance and takes food out of the mouths of millions more. My turn came just before 4 am.

Rules committee just dropped an amended version of the Big Bad Budget Bill with a provision to pressure health exchange plans to drop abortion services except in the case of rape or the life of the mother (which are very narrow exceptions) even if federal funds are not used to cover the services.
Watch my full remarks here:
Combined with the actions of the Trump Administration, this Big Bad Billionaire Bonus Bill puts states in a bind in which they will have to chose between raising state taxes or drastically cutting essential services from health care to education and beyond.
