Today is Brown v. Board of Education Day — a day to recognize the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down segregation in schools.Seventy-two years later, we remember the courage of those who fought to overturn “separate but equal,” and recommit ourselves to the work that still remains to create a fairer, more equitable world for everyone.Today is also an opportunity to reflect on the unique role Delaware played in this history. I was proud to recognize the Hockessin Colored School #107C, a former one-room schoolhouse that became one of three locations in Delaware designated as affiliate sites of the Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park.This schoolhouse tells the story of Delaware’s role in challenging legal segregation and the neighbors who helped make Delaware the first state to end Jim Crow segregation in education.When I visited the site, it was an honor to meet some of the Delawareans who not only lived this history, but who now work to preserve it and share our state’s story with future generations.
