THIS IS NOT NORMAL.
The halls of Congress should NEVER be this empty during a government shutdown.
And they for damn sure shouldn’t be this quiet when millions of Americans will soon be faced with hunger + life threatening health care decisions.
Shameful. Republicans need to come back to work!
For Congress to function, Members need to show up, talk, and act in good faith.
Speaker Johnson is doing the opposite — keeping Republicans home to block cooperation. (Oh, and to avoid releasing the Epstein Files!)
The Trump Administration has billions in reserve and the authority to keep food benefits flowing.
Instead, they’re using hunger as a weapon—refusing to use the contingency fund, sowing panic, and cutting off SNAP for 42 million Americans.

Q: Are you talking to your GOP colleagues? It feels like all norms are being tossed out.
A: I’ve never seen a dismantling of norms like this. We *need* good people on that side. I’ve worked with Republicans on many issues.
I think Johnson is keeping us away so we *can't* talk some sense to them!
Q: Why is ICE allowed to attack citizens and violate people’s rights?
A: It’s so alarming. They’re going after mothers, fathers, children. My colleagues and I are looking at every possible tool to hold them accountable.
It’s a huge fight, but we’re in it. People’s rights need to be protected.
Q: How can Trump get away with destroying the East Wing of the White House?
A: I’m outraged by this. He didn’t get *any* of the necessary approvals. If you or I wanted to tear down part of our house, we’d need permits. It’s truly shocking.
I’ve sent a letter to the President demanding answers.
Q: Will the shutdown affect veterans’ retirement pay.
A: There should be no impact to veterans’ benefits—including pensions and housing benefits. There may be disruptions to some services (for things like continuing education), which is why it’s so important that we end this shutdown.
Q—Why won’t Speaker Johnson swear in Rep. Grijalva from Arizona?
A: As soon as Rep. Grijalva is sworn in, it would trigger a discharge petition to release the Epstein files. It’s certainly suspicious that the Speaker doesn’t want to swear in our newest member.
One thing people don't realize about healthcare (and ACA coverage): If these tax credits expire, it will impact EVERYONE—regardless of their coverage.
That's why it's critical that we extend the ACA enhanced premium tax credits—and why Democrats are insisting they be extended to end the shutdown.
Q: When will people who currently have ACA coverage know if their premiums will rise?
A: You can visit CoverME.gov and use the shopping tool to get an estimate of what your premiums might cost in 2026 assuming the ACA tax credits expire—and explore more coverage options (including providers).
Q: Does SNAP have a contingency fund for people with disabilities?
A: We’ve been pushing back on the Admin, reminding them there are $5 billion in SNAP reserve funds. People *must* get their benefits. Maine’s food banks are great, but they won’t be able to meet the growing need if SNAP is cut off.
Q: What can Congress do to stop Trump from illegally deploying troops—whether to Venezuela or to American cities?
A: We shouldn’t be asking our military to do any of this. Congress has the power to declare war, and it’s critical that we protect that power—and not let Trump declare any illegal war.
Q: How can we stop Trump from tearing down our democracy?
A: People are deeply concerned, including many who voted for him. He's destroying Congress’s power of the purse and threatening future elections.
We all have a responsibility to speak up—and *I* have a responsibility to keep you informed.
Q: When will the shutdown start impacting Social Security?
A: There should be no interruption to Social Security benefits during the shutdown. But we are concerned about Trump and Republicans wanting to privatize Social Security. Protecting this vital program be a big focus for us moving forward.
Q: When can we expect the House to be back in session?
A: So far, the Speaker has been unwilling to bring us back. We’re ready to negotiate at any time. Our biggest issues are 1) the ACA premium tax credits, and 2) the cancellation of SNAP benefits. Once they’re ready to negotiate, we’ll be there.
