After Congress missed its deadline to fund the federal government by the start of October, local impacts on Michiganders are already starting to be felt, according to three University of Michigan faculty members. Story from @kdailey.bsky.social
All this makes us less safe in the process. If you care about the military — not to mention democracy — you should mark yesterday in your calendars as a sad and historic moment in our history. (10/10)
President Trump and Secretary Hegseth are attempting to manipulate it for their own gain, tarnishing the military’s reputation and making American citizens suspicious and fearful of their own protectors. (9/10)
Instead, he's using a well-worn playbook that seeks to consolidate the use of force and improperly turn the military into the enforcers of his political agenda. It should make all of us deeply uncomfortable, because while it’s someone else’s city today, it could be your city tomorrow. (6/10)
Make no mistake, this is NOT about fighting crime. If he truly cared about the safety of these cities, he could use his broad authority to provide police forces in those cities, hire hundreds of new officers, or... (4/10)
First, and most importantly: they accelerated their case that America is in the middle of a violent insurrection that the military must quell. The President believes he is the hero of his own story and is willing to hurt the standing of the U.S. military to look tough in public. (2/10)
The targeted violence in Grand Blanc was meant to terrorize. And by making us afraid, it is infringing on our freedom. If people don’t feel they are safe in their sanctuaries, that is infringing on their freedom.
A potential federal govt shutdown would have impacts in MI, as does anything happening in DC. Today, I held a virtual town hall with local leaders from across MI, answering their questions about what a shutdown of the federal govt means for their communities, and how my team can help.
If you want my vote, you have to negotiate in good faith and act like adults to pass a budget. The President has violated the Constitution and the law too many times, and I am not just going to take him at his word. I have to see it in black and white.
