Proud to recognize Broward Community & Family Health Centers' amazing contributions to our South Florida community with a Congressional Record Statement! BCOM treats every patient with dignity, regardless of what they can pay, or what language they speak. I'm proud to support them.
The right to vote is under attack. As we commemorate the enactment of the Voting Rights Act, we must remember that the fight for freedom is not yet over. It’s time for Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and end the era of voter suppression once and for all.
I've spent years fighting to free Cuban political prisoners who have suffered behind bars as their rights are violated by the regime. I'm grateful Luis Manuel is finally free, but we must continue to raise our voices for Maykel Castillo Perez and 1300+ more.
Trump’s disastrous war has put our troops in danger. Now he’s sending their loved ones to ICE jails. Military families deserve gratitude and support, not cruelty. And the people defending our freedom shouldn't have their families' freedom ripped away.
Kay Granger blazed many trails, across Texas and as the first Republican woman to lead the House Appropriations Committee. I’m fortunate to have served along side her, and to have a front row seat to the quiet grace and confidence that inspired others to follow her lead.
Yesterday, I spoke to Claudia, a constituent who's detained by ICE. She lawfully moved here and recently earned her master’s degree. Claudia and countless other law-abiding immigrants came here to make a better life for themselves. They don't deserve to be locked up for that.
ICE agents are overrunning airports to catch law-abiding residents like Claudia, upending lives, wasting taxpayer dollars, and betraying our values. Every dollar we spend on ICE targeting people like Claudia is a dollar not spent on making life more affordable for our families.
I also introduced the Build Homes, Not Hate Act to claw back $70B in unspent ICE funds to instead build much-needed affordable housing, and end America's housing crisis. We should spend tax dollars on making life better for people in America, not more ICE jails.
I introduced the No PREJUDICE Act to ensure that that no DHS funds may be used to target people based on perceived race, ethnicity, job, language or other protected traits. Speaking English with an accent or another language shouldn't be legal cause for immigration enforcement.
Claudia lawfully moved to the United States in 2017 on a tourist visa and applied for asylum, which is pending. Last year, she earned her master’s degree. She is held in Pompano Beach after being detained for eight days in Miramar, longer than the 72 hours allowed by law.
I just made a surprise oversight inspection of another Broward ICE facility, where I spoke to Claudia, a constituent who's detained there despite a clean record. Stories like Claudia’s and so many others must lead to action. Here's what I heard, and what I'm doing about it: 🧵
Loved seeing a screening of Inside the Oasis: The Story of South Florida's Gay Mecca. It honors Broward's LGBTQ+ community and their sacrifices in the fight for equality. I'm so proud to represent one of the boldest, most vibrant, diverse LGBTQ+ communities in the nation.
