Suzanne Bonamici

Suzanne Marie Bonamici is an American lawyer and politician serving as the U.S. representative for Oregon's 1st congressional district, a seat she was first elected to in a 2012 special election. The district includes most of Portland west of the Willamette River, along with most of Portland's western suburbs such as Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, and Lake Oswego.

AG Rayfield fights to protect billions in disaster preparedness funding

AG Rayfield and multistate coalition have asked the court to enforce its December 2025 order – that FEMA cannot end the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program, and must take steps to get these disaster preparedness dollars flowing back to local communities. In the past two months, however, the federal government has offered no indication that they have complied with the court order.

FEMA BRIC grants awarded in Oregon include nearly $14 million in federal funds to help Clatsop County prepare for a potential Cascadia subduction zone earthquake and tsunami; nearly $35 million for critical infrastructure improvements to the City of Medford’s water distribution system; and $50 million to help the City of Grants Pass move its existing water treatment plant outside of a flood hazard area.

“With longer wildfire seasons and devastating flooding becoming more frequent in Oregon, the BRIC program is essential to protecting our cities, schools, and families.
The court has already ruled that ending it was unlawful – FEMA must follow that order and get these critical funds to the Oregon communities that need them now.”

Oregon lost a legend. Senator Avel Gordly was a trailblazer, a leader, a fierce advocate, a changemaker, a colleague, and a friend. Her work on education, behavioral health, civil rights, and more made Oregon a better place. I send sincere condolences to her family and friends.
