This tragedy is yet another devastating reminder that ICE is carrying out immigration enforcement recklessly and aggressively with dangerous consequences and a brazen disregard for the law and human life.

Like so many Americans, I am horrified by today’s fatal shooting by ICE in Minneapolis.
I extend my sincere condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
Doug was a fierce advocate for his district, deeply passionate about the interests of his constituents, and a fervent voice for rural communities across California. He was a dear colleague whose dedication to the people he represented was evident throughout his public service.
While we often disagreed ideologically, we shared a commitment to serving our constituents and taking seriously the responsibility entrusted to us.
I am saddened by the passing of Doug LaMalfa. Before serving together in Congress, Doug and I also served alongside one another in the California State Legislature.
We must never forget the horrors of January 6. We must continue to condemn those who carried out and enabled this insurrection. And above all, we must always honor the law enforcement officers whose courage protected our democracy and upheld the rule of law.
This egregious action denied justice to victims, erased the trauma suffered by law enforcement, and trivialized the deadly consequences of an attack incited by the former president himself.
On day one of his second term, Trump pardoned nearly 1,600 individuals who participated in this brazen assault, many of whom have since committed additional violent and sexual crimes.
In the years since the January 6 insurrection, Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress have worked to distort history, fabricate false narratives, and minimize the violence and terror that unfolded that day.
More than 140 officers were seriously injured as they courageously upheld the Constitution and protected the peaceful transfer of power. Their bravery is the reason our democracy endured.
On one of the darkest days in our democracy, Capitol Police and law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to defend the U.S. Capitol and Members of Congress.
Congress must be immediately and fully briefed on this unauthorized use of military force, and the American people deserve full transparency and accountability for these actions and their consequences.
The President is acting beyond his constitutional authority and has no legal basis to unilaterally assert U.S. control over another nation.
Trump’s reckless action risks drawing the United States into a protracted conflict and has created dangerous uncertainty and instability for both Venezuela and the American people.
However, that reality does not justify Donald Trump’s decision to initiate an unauthorized military action against Venezuela without Congressional approval.
Nicolás Maduro is an oppressive dictator who has inflicted profound suffering on the Venezuelan people. They deserve democracy, the protection of human rights, and the ability to determine their own future.
Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy New Year!
As we reflect on 2025 and welcome 2026, may we stay grounded in hope for a better and brighter future.
Use caution when driving, watch for downed trees and power lines, and be prepared for potential power outages. Stay safe and check local alerts for updates.
