While President Trump this week reached a “massive deal” with Japan by lowering tariffs from his threatened 25% to 15%, the truth is that a 15% rate is still a sharp increase with real economic consequences.
As co-chairs of the U.S. Congressional Study Groups on Japan and South Korea, we issue a stark warning about the economically reckless and strategically dangerous use of tariffs that undercut two of our most important alliances at a time when we need them most.
NEW: @degette.house.gov and I wrote an op-ed for The Japan Times on how Trump’s tariffs undermine America’s businesses, security, and credibility on the world stage. 🧵
Trump touted lowering tariffs on Japan to 15% as a 'massive deal.’ But 15% is not a 'deal' at all. As co-chair of the Study Group on Japan, I'm sounding the alarm on the diplomatic & economic damage his reckless tariffs are causing in the region. Read my full op-ed with @bera.house.gov‬ below. ⬇️
Speaker Johnson is so afraid of Donald Trump that he’s sending us home early instead of letting us vote on releasing the Epstein files. The American people deserve to know what is in these files. What are Donald Trump and Mike Johnson trying to hide?
If you’re at the State Fair, come on by, enjoy some great chili, & take a moment to thank the firefighters who work every day to keep our communities safe.
Firefighters from across California are competing against one another to see who makes the best chili and to raise awareness about the HERO Act— a bill I wrote to support the mental health & well-being of our first responders.

NEWS: The U.S.-Japan-Republic of Korea Trilateral Cooperation Act just passed out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee! My bill establishes a formal inter-parliamentary dialogue between the United States, Japan, & South Korea to bolster cooperation and advance our shared interests & values. 🇺🇸 🇯🇵 🇰🇷
Thank you to the more than 10,000 Sacramento County residents who joined me for tonight’s telephone town hall. Your engagement and determination are powerful reminders that Donald Trump’s actions do not reflect the values we hold dear as Americans.

Shutting down the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline for LGBTQ youth is cruel. As a doctor, I know how vital it is for young people—especially LGBTQ youth—to have someone to talk to in a moment of crisis. I’m proud to see California once again stepping up and leading the way forward.
Today, Donald Trump and Republicans are shamefully shutting down the federal Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for LGBTQ youth. California will not stand idly by. We're partnering with @trevorproject.bsky.social to upgrade the state's 24/7 call centers to provide life-saving support and care.
