This week, @laborcaucus.house.gov held a meeting with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union International President Bobby Olvera Jr. The 40,000 members of the ILWU are the backbone of America’s supply chain, and we had a great conversation today about how we can support them in Congress.
Last summer, the Supreme Court issued an unprecedented decision shielding the president from criminal prosecution. In America – where all are created equal – no one is above the law. I joined @Morelle.house.gov to introduce a constitutional amendment to end absolute immunity for presidents.
Just over a year ago, SCOTUS handed down a disastrous ruling giving presidents absolute immunity from criminal prosecution. Today, I reintroduced my constitutional amendment to make sure presidents are held accountable under the law.
The numbers are in. According to experts at the nonpartisan CBO, the Trump tax package will: ❌Kick 10 MILLION Americans off their health insurance 📈Add $3.4 TRILLION to the national debt 💰Hand out massive tax breaks to billionaires It’s a big, ugly ripoff of working families.
Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, we’ve seen the devastating impacts of extreme abortion bans in states across the country: women being denied lifesaving care and doctors living in fear. We need to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to restore reproductive rights for all.
Last week, Republicans in Congress greenlit President Trump’s cuts to local broadcasting, lifesaving international aid, and other important programs. It’s a complete abdication of Congress’ power to direct spending and a signal to Trump that there are no checks on his power. Shameful.
🚨BIG NEWS – My Improving Veterans Experience Act just passed the House! It was great to work with @juliabrownley.house.gov and @repmcgarvey.bsky.social on this bill to ensure veteran feedback stays at the heart of VA’s operations.
We’re facing some of the hottest temperatures on record this summer and it’s absolutely unacceptable that American workers have no legal protection against excessive heat. I’m proud to join @chu.house.gov in introducing a bill to create a federal standard to keep workers safe & healthy on the job.
Last week, I convened farmers, food banks, and other folks from the food and ag sectors to talk about threats to food access in Central and Southern Illinois. Hunger isn’t inevitable – and I will keep pushing for policies that help more people get more food on the table, not less.
On this day in 1968, the first Special Olympic games were held! My nephew Noah loves participating in the Special Olympics program at his school, and I’m committed to supporting these opportunities that have given countless folks with disabilities the chance to play, compete, and grow.
Trump’s elimination of important USDA programs, combined with deep cuts to SNAP, is making it harder for food banks to stay open and families to keep food on the table. I refuse to let our neighbors go hungry and I met with leaders in Carlinville today to talk about how we’re fighting back.
This bill is a slap in the face to all who have courageously served our nation and made immense sacrifices to defend the freedoms we hold dear. I was proud to vote no and to side with what is right for our troops.
It directs DoD to make almost $8 billion in cuts – putting troop pay on the chopping block. It’s appalling that House Republicans would force our heroes in uniform to take a pay cut so that billionaires can get a tax break.
It attacks LGBTQ+ servicemembers with hateful policies and prevents female servicemembers from traveling to seek reproductive care, even when they’re stationed in a state where it is unavailable. These policies will undermine our troops' health, morale, and readiness.
This bill is a highly-partisan spending plan that hurts our military readiness and undermines the welfare of our servicemembers. It’s yet another cynical attempt by House Republicans to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations – this time on the backs of our troops.
These cuts jeopardize local public broadcasting, strip access to critical healthcare, gut lifesaving emergency programs, and undermine our support for global allies. It doesn’t make us stronger — it makes us weaker.
