Bill Spelman was the kind of public servant we all strive to be: Smart, thoughtful, principled, humble, and endlessly generous with his time and talent. I was honored to celebrate his life alongside Niyanta, his sons, and his many friends, all inspired by his work for a better Austin.
In DC, crime is down; Trump tyranny is up. Just like his wrongful calling out the Marines in LA over the Mayor's and Governor's objections, Trump militarizes DC. He seeks precedents for future illegal use of military to suppress protests against his tyrannical rule.
Thousands of civilian deaths later, Trump can still not utter a word critical of war criminal Putin. Ignoring his own deadlines for action, our weak president, all bluster, has scheduled an appeasement conference with Putin in Alaska to respond to the war in Ukraine without any Ukrainians.
I stand with the American Federation of Government Employees in Central Texas who serve our nation’s veterans at the VA. Trump’s decision to terminate their bargaining agreement is a violation of their rights, harming their ability to provide the quality support that our veterans deserve.
Great to visit with Austin small business owners Steph Steele, David Ansel, and Robby Pettinato. A productive discussion on the challenges they encounter including tariff taxes that are spiking prices for businesses and consumers.
Sunday at City Hall, Libby and I will join Bill’s family, friends, colleagues, and all others mourning his passing to celebrate his tremendous contributions to our community. See you there.
Trump promised to lower prices on day one and claimed Big Pharma is getting away with murder, yet his Big Ugly Bill will raise drug prices and cost taxpayers billions. For the 15M Americans about to lose all health coverage under this bill, overpriced medications will be completely inaccessible.
Pleased to join progressive leaders to highlight the harm of crooked Trump maps and the need to protect Americans’ right to choose accountable and accessible representatives. Thousands of patriotic democracy defenders joined our call.
Before the Texas floods, DOGE purged the National Weather Service of critical staff. Now, after the loss of life in weather disasters across the country, the Trump Admin is belatedly reinstating hundreds of positions. To prevent future tragedies, our Central Texas office must be fully staffed.
I organized the first Congressional Reproductive Rights Field Hearing in TX, where we heard painful, heartbreaking stories from women eager to have a baby, yet faced near-death experiences because of GOP interference. Republican abortion bans endanger lives & obstruct access to reproductive care.
On its 60th anniversary today, the Voting Rights Act is under assault. Similar to Trump pressuring the Georgia Secretary of State in 2020 to find 11,780 votes, Trump found willing Texas GOP accomplices ready to replace five Democrats with five Republicans.
As Texas Republicans redraw congressional maps to target Democrats, voting rights are under siege. Tonight, on the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act, @doggett.house.gov and @repnikema.bsky.social join The Weeknight to discuss making "good trouble" to protect our democracy.
Today, we solemnly remember the atomic bombing of Hiroshima that resulted in utter devastation, death, and lingering illnesses for thousands of civilians. Nuclear weapons are a divider, never a unifier. We must reaffirm our commitment to preventing nuclear war and creating lasting peace.
Pleased to celebrate 90 years of Social Security with AARP Texas. This hard-earned benefit lifts millions out of poverty, including surviving children and spouses. It is a lifeline we must continue to protect.
On the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, Trump & the GOP are trying to undermine protections with a redistricting scheme in Texas. As my late friend, Rep. John Lewis, would say, let's make some Good Trouble and do all we can to stop Trump's maps. We must ensure every Texan's voice is heard.
Trump’s self-destructive economic policies are killing job growth. Here's the truth: businesses aren’t increasing investments in many communities because Trump and Republicans' chaotic policies are destabilizing. Trump’s tariffs are on-and-off-and-on-again as prices on everything rise.
Nonstop—and way over the top—intimidation from Trump's Texas minions. Rep. Gene Wu is a democracy defender. The derelicts are those abandoning their responsibility to Texans as they take an oath to Trump.
INBOX: Texas Governor Greg Abbott has filed a lawsuit in the state Supreme Court against State Rep. Gene Wu, the Chair of the Texas Democratic Caucus, seeking his removal from office
