As Texas Republicans redraw congressional maps to target Democrats, voting rights are under siege. Tonight, on the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act, @doggett.house.gov and @repnikema.bsky.social join The Weeknight to discuss making "good trouble" to protect our democracy.
Today, we solemnly remember the atomic bombing of Hiroshima that resulted in utter devastation, death, and lingering illnesses for thousands of civilians. Nuclear weapons are a divider, never a unifier. We must reaffirm our commitment to preventing nuclear war and creating lasting peace.
Pleased to celebrate 90 years of Social Security with AARP Texas. This hard-earned benefit lifts millions out of poverty, including surviving children and spouses. It is a lifeline we must continue to protect.
On the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, Trump & the GOP are trying to undermine protections with a redistricting scheme in Texas. As my late friend, Rep. John Lewis, would say, let's make some Good Trouble and do all we can to stop Trump's maps. We must ensure every Texan's voice is heard.
Trump’s self-destructive economic policies are killing job growth. Here's the truth: businesses aren’t increasing investments in many communities because Trump and Republicans' chaotic policies are destabilizing. Trump’s tariffs are on-and-off-and-on-again as prices on everything rise.
Nonstop—and way over the top—intimidation from Trump's Texas minions. Rep. Gene Wu is a democracy defender. The derelicts are those abandoning their responsibility to Texans as they take an oath to Trump.
INBOX: Texas Governor Greg Abbott has filed a lawsuit in the state Supreme Court against State Rep. Gene Wu, the Chair of the Texas Democratic Caucus, seeking his removal from office
Lawsuit by Texas Governor Greg Abbott against Rep. Gene Wu seeking to remove him from office
Gov. Abbott and the Texas GOP failed to take preventive action before the floods that could have saved lives. They failed to prioritize flooding in the Special Session, and now are wrongly using flood victims as political hostages to urge Democrats to return for approval of Trump's crooked maps.
Trump’s cuts to both FEMA and the National Weather Service have already harmed Texans. Now, he seems determined to use FEMA aid for devastated flood victims as a cudgel against his perceived enemies rather than as the helping hand it should be.
Rep. Casar and I are united in fighting Trump’s scheme to extend his control of Congress through gerrymandering Texas and other GOP-dominated states. We salute our State House Democrats, who are not yielding to Abbott/Paxton intimidation on behalf of Trump.
On Friday, the Supreme Court announced that a Louisiana redistricting case must be reargued, indicating the desire of some Justices to eviscerate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act by eliminating any consideration of race. Such an adverse ruling could impact communities across the country.
Spoke to PoliticsNation on Saturday on why Trump's redistricting scheme to rig the system is even bigger than Texas. I salute the Texas House Democrats who are defending democracy against this outrageous assault—Trump’s attempt to steal next year’s elections by rigging the system this year.
Trump already blocked billions in education funding. Now, he wants to slash MORE from our underfunded public schools. More cuts mean fewer teachers, crowded classrooms, and less support for students. Just like clawing back NPR and PBS funds, Republicans want less education and more misinformation.
Texans didn't ask for new congressional maps, Trump did. I spoke to @fox7austin.bsky.social earlier this week about how extreme gerrymandering hurts every community, and why Texas Republicans have decided to choose the president's interest over the families they represent.
Trump is trying to steal next year’s Congressional election by rigging it this year. His extraordinary scheme to undermine our democracy demands an extraordinary response, like that of our Texas state legislators have underway. (1/2)
Texas GOP is caving to Trump's redistricting scheme; these crooked lines will hurt Central Texas. Congressional offices help everyone, from veterans to seniors, get benefits they earned. If Trump's maps aren't stopped, many Austinites will find doors shut when they need help from a Congressmember.
The Texas House Redistricting Republicans voted to rubber stamp Trump’s crooked congressional map. Here’s some of what I told MSNBC’s The Weekend early this morning about the national implications of this power grab to which we must respond forcefully across America.
Painful, horrifying stories from women eager to have a baby, yet faced with near death experiences because of Republican interference with the ability of physicians to offer the best and safest care. (3/3)
