My thoughts are with the victims and families of the attack in Boulder, CO, during a peaceful gathering calling for the release of Israeli hostages. Antisemitism has no place in our country. Hate triggers more cycles of violence and sets back a peaceful future for Israelis, Palestinians, and us all.
Joined by local health experts, I discussed the impact of Republicans’ bill on Central Texans as the wealthiest few stand to gain 310 times the benefit of those making $50,000 or less. Due to GOP cuts to health care and food assistance, those vulnerable neighbors will see a DECREASE in income.
Discussed the harsh impact of Trump tariffs and other business issues with Asian American entrepreneurs who do so much for our community and our country. Especially good to be joined by my friend Jimmy Ferguson.
We celebrate decades of progress since Stonewall while recognizing how extremist wrongdoing impacts many families. Reaffirming our commitment to defending rights and advancing equality, determined to overcome Republican interference. (2/2)
As a Vice-Chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus, I am pleased to represent Austin’s LGBTQI+ community in Congress. I began this Pride Month with Austin LGBT Chamber leaders to discuss economics intertwined with respect for all and strength through diversity. (1/2)
Texas is facing a highly contagious, yet very preventable, measles outbreak that has already taken lives. Contrary to anti-vaccine conspiracies peddled by the Trump administration, the MMR vaccine is safe and effective.
When Trump cruelly halted US foreign assistance, over 130,000 metric tons of food, as well as vaccines and other medicine, could not be distributed. Global development expert Charles Kenny rightly assesses: "The best evidence that USAID works is how quickly people started dying when it went away."
Under Republicans' "big beautiful bill," around 1.2 million Texans are expected to lose health coverage, about 806,000 Texas families will lose food assistance to put meals on their tables, and a federal voucher scheme will threaten public schools. All to pay for billionaire tax breaks.
Great visiting with my longtime friend Ray Carvajal, and his daughter Jessica and nephew Mark, at their impressive long-term care pharmacy in San Antonio serving folks all over Texas. Family-owned businesses and independent pharmacies improve the consumer experience and continuity of care.
After the most severe storm in Austin since the Abbott ice fiasco 2 years ago, I salute the first responders who conducted water rescues and other emergency calls, as well as Austin Energy workers. My thoughts are with the individual who died and the many neighbors impacted by power outages/damage.
The GOP snuck another ugly detail in Trump’s “big beautiful bill” to punish single parents. The bill exempts a married parent with small children from new work requirements, but compels compliance for single parents who have less time to navigate all the red tape they’re adding for SNAP assistance.
Great to visit with @utaustin.bsky.social students from Steve Hicks School of Social Work - UT Austin and The LBJ School of Public Affairs. We had a critical discussion on advocacy and the challenges facing Texas. These engaged students are prepared to lead the next generation of change.
The Netanyahu government’s assault on the children of Gaza, aided and abetted by the Trump administration, is truly reprehensible. As correctly described by an Israeli Zionist, deliberately starving infants not yet old enough to walk, outrageously forces the innocent to pay the price for the evil.
The President of @afghanevac.bsky.social rightly points out: "If you’re White, wealthy and far-right aligned, the Trump administration will find a pathway for you." But for those who served alongside our troops, who fled war zones & gang violence, who have no $400M jet to offer—they're out of luck.
Seabirds in Australia ingest so much plastic pollution that they crunch when touched. Yes, you read that correctly. I oppose GOP rollback of environmental protections, and I’m working to reduce the wide-ranging harms of plastic pollution.
