Ensuring it remains a place where history, culture, and community continue to thrive for generations.
After working with Highland Beach Mayor Chissel over the last year on solutions, I visited the beach and the Frederick Douglass Museum along with Secretary Strickland, Senator Henson, Delegate Jones, and Delegate Behler to discuss how we can collaborate to restore the shoreline.
However, over the years, this historical and cultural landmark has lost significant beachfront land, and rising tides are only causing greater risk.
Located right here in #MD03, Highland Beach was the first African-American municipality in Maryland, the site of Frederick Douglass’ summer house, & one of the most prominent Black beaches in the nation – drawing visitors like Mary Church Terrell, W.E.B. Du Bois, Langston Hughes, & more.
The fight is not over yet – I’m committed to using every means possible to reassert Congress’s role as the sole power of the purse and put taxpayer dollars towards policies that actually serve our neighbors. The American people deserve transparency.
Some good news: a federal judge has blocked President Trump from moving forward with his 'anti-weaponization' fund, which could give payouts to January 6th insurrectionists without any oversight.
To date, my team has already returned over $2.9 million directly to neighbors like Bharat – ensuring they receive the benefits they deserve. If you think we can be of assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out at (410) 832-8890 or check out the link below for more information on how we can help.
From Social Security benefits to IRS and immigration issues, #TeamElfreth is here to help our neighbors on their hardest days. One of those neighbors, Bharat from Clarksville, had trouble getting his son’s much needed Social Security benefits, & our team was able to resolve their issue in one month!
Beautiful day to grab lunch at the one of my favorite traditions, the 34th annual Annapolis Greek festival! 🇬🇷
We are changing our approach to watershed restoration – not one project at a time, but dozens of projects within five distinct watersheds at rapid speed – through collaborative, creative efforts like these. Stay tuned for the work ahead!
Thank you so much to @marylanddnr.bsky.social Secretary Kurtz, Delegate Behler, @danajonesmaryland.bsky.social the Severn River Association, Chesapeake Bay Trust and all the other state, local, and private partners who made these projects possible.
Yesterday, we got to see the progress on the first of dozens of our Whole Watershed projects, which are helping control runoff on more than 6 acres of impervious ground and improving the health of the Severn River right here in Annapolis (it’s also helped bring back the minnows!).
Two years ago in the Maryland Senate, I authored the Whole Watershed Act with @saralove4md.bsky.social because we knew that we needed to think bigger, be bolder, & move faster to protect the Chesapeake Bay – acting at the scale & speed science & our communities demand like we never have before.
“We’ve always done it this way,” and “we’ve never done it that way” are two phrases I hate to hear from my partners in government.
If you’re under 18, then apply to the #MD03 America 250 Video Contest by Wednesday, June 10th at 11:59 PM & share what participation means to you. We can only continue this experiment for another 250 years if our young people keep leaning in, so apply today & make your voice heard! 🇺🇲
That’s why, in honor of this milestone year, my team and I want to hear how you all are continuing to be part of our democracy.
250 years ago, our nation was founded on the radical idea of self-determination, giving the people the power to decide who governs them. As your member of Congress, I have a role to play in this great experiment – but so do all of you!
Even if you weren’t able to join us in Howard County, we’ll be hosting a second district resource fair in Anne Arundel County soon – stay tuned for more details!
