Also, it's a joke. That said, if you're arguing that it's not ethical for people to surmise whether they're likely to enjoy a movie, an actor, or a subgenre in advance, I respectfully disagree.
The GOP is a party of hardcore, unrepentant racists who are pushing for voter ID by claiming it is needed in order to prevent voter fraud--which is a decades-long lie that was always intended to lay the groundwork for disenfranchising non-white citizens. There is no nuance; that is all this is.
Katie Britt: "You can't go to work, you can't shovel snow in New York City without an ID"
This is a perfect example of what MAGA does with stuff like this. "Actually, your movie will be fine as long as your distributor's marketing team isn't all white men or you hire a couple of interns" takes 3 seconds to become "The woke Academy wants to kill Forrest Gump." bsky.app/profile/inje...
Someone was telling me yesterday that Forrest Gump wouldn’t have been made today if it had to meet these requirements. I stopped responding after that. The Rooney rule in the NFL has more teeth
and turn it into some nonsensical fantasy about how great movies about white heroes are being barred from the Oscars so that Sinners can win all the things. The "very few people know this" is perfect MAGA icing: Someone who doesn't know the first thing about this boasting that he did the research. >
I thought the Academy's decision to do this was wrong for many reasons--one being that there are so many loopholes in the rules that the net result would be to put a thumb on the scale not in favor of diversity but in favor of big expensive movies. But it's typical that MAGA-world would grab this >
Yes, a few years ago, the Academy instituted a set of diversity standards that movies had to meet to be eligible for nominations. But the truth is, the requirements can be met so many different ways that not one movie that otherwise might have been nominated--for anything--has been disqualified. >
This is Jeremy Carl, the "What about racism against whites?!" guy who recently had to withdraw from consideration for a State Dept. post because he was too racist even for Republicans, in a podcast with Ross Douthat. He says all kinds of wrong things, but I want to address just one. >
Well, I’m not quite sure. I get what you’re saying. I’m not saying there’s absolutely zero to it. If I made the strongest possible version of my argument, I might grant you that. But I think we have all sorts of cases where people have said: Yes, I, as a white guy, was told to take my name off this script that I had written because they didn’t want a white screenwriter, and I did the work and somebody else got credit.

We have enough of those stories to suggest that this is a real thing that is going on. And certainly, if you look at, say, the Academy Awards — and very few people know this — where, in the last few years, there’s all sorts of explicit quotas of racial — not just racial, but all sorts of things that you have to check off.

Again, I think we’ve got smoking guns here. It’s not just that I’m saying the number is different, so it’s wrong.
I can't get everything I want out of social media on Bluesky. Also, I can't get everything I want out of social media. Also, I can't get everything I want. Part of life is deciding what you can live without, and what isn't worth the cost of obtaining.
"No deporting U.S. citizens" is a concession? Wad this trash up and throw it back in their faces.
The White House sent Sens. Collins and Britt this letter detailing the immigration enforcement changes they are willing to make to fund DHS -body cameras -limit enforcement at sensitive locations -oversight -visible officer identification -no deporting US citizens cdn.sanity.io/files/ifn0l6...
I have reported on many Oscar controversies over 35 years, and I can say flatly that not one of them has been as stupid as people criticizing Teyana Taylor for "overenthusiastically" cheering on Amy Madigan and other winners. If this irritated you, please withdraw from pop culture: You have failed.
I am one of the 200,000+ patients affected by this, and having struggled with approximately 10,000 phone calls, messages, and faxes (yes, these people still insist on faxes in the year of our lord 2026), I can honestly say that I wish the very worst for both sides. www.cbsnews.com/amp/newyork/...
