There are a lot of reasons for this, ranging from low theater availability because shows are now occupying houses forever in the desperate hope that they might recoup one of these years to producer aversion because the last couple of seasons have been a bloodbath. From any angle, not good news.

Related: Right now only 12 Broadway shows are scheduled to open before the end of the year (one of the 12 already opened/flopped). Excluding covid, that is the lowest total in at least 15 years, and maybe ever? More shows could get added, I guess, but right now...the crisis is getting more crisis-y.

There are no villains in that story imo. From what I overheard of Morton's work, she was going for something more remote, disembodied, slightly mysterious and less virtual-girlfriend. I think Jonze honestly came to realize that he wanted something else. But it'd be fun to see/hear an alternate cut.
