In 1989, Governor Wilder became the first African American to be elected governor in U.S. history. From his heroism in the Korean War, to expanding health care coverage for sickle-cell anemia patients, to his work teaching law and public affairs at VCU, Wilder has forged a better Commonwealth.

Trump’s NPS hiring freeze paves the way for a damaging loss of staff at national parks—threatening emergency response times, park safety, and local economies in Virginia. I’m urging the Trump Administration to reverse course and protect our parks.
I was grateful to meet with children, teachers, and staff at Higher Horizons, a Head Start program in NOVA, to highlight the importance of Head Start, hear more about the lingering uncertainty following Trump's actions, and discuss ways I can help.

From hurricane-related damage in Southwest VA to rising sea levels in Hampton Roads and on the Eastern Shore—climate change is threatening our safety. Yet Trump withdrew from the Paris Agreement. I’m joining legislation to uphold the goals of this crucial climate treaty.
In tough times, we come together as a community to mourn and hold each other up. I was honored to join a vigil commemorating those who lost their lives in the DCA crash last week. Those we lost and their loved ones remain in my prayers. www.alxnow.com/2025/02/06/c...
Even after the Trump Admin rescinded the memo suspending federal funding, many community health centers STILL aren’t able to access their funding. That’s unacceptable, and I’m pressing the Trump Administration for answers.

With Virginia’s 140,000 dedicated federal workers on my mind, I helped Senate Democrats hold the Senate floor all night to protest Trump’s OMB nominee Russ Vought—a key author of Project 2025 who says he wants to “traumatize” federal workers.
Under no circumstances can Russ Vought—a key architect of Project 2025—be confirmed. My colleagues and I will be holding the Senate floor ALL night in opposition of his nomination.
When President Trump halted federal funding last week, Head Start programs were plunged into chaos. Yanking their funding is irresponsible and dangerous. I wrote to the acting HHS Secretary demanding Head Start programs receive the funding Congress has appropriated for them.
Too many Virginians can't afford job training programs and too many employers struggle to fill skilled labor positions. I have a solution: my JOBS Act will allow students to use Pell Grants—education grants for lower-income folks—to pay for shorter-term job training programs.
USAID advances U.S. national security and helps ensure global stability. I’m deeply concerned about Musk and Trump’s attempt to destroy USAID. That's why I led my colleagues in a letter to Secretary of State Rubio demanding answers about this illegal and unprecedented action.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was created by Congress after the 2008 recession to protect American consumers from financial fraud. CFPB has put billions of dollars back into Americans' wallets. The Trump Administration's halt on its work is wrong and harmful to Americans.
Happy Black History Month! Today and always, we celebrate and honor the invaluable contributions African Americans have made to our communities. In difficult times, I draw inspiration from Black leaders throughout history who worked tirelessly to forge a better world.
Today I met with Virginian leaders who provide community services—from housing to early childhood education—to learn how Trump’s illegal federal funding freeze impacted their organizations. Virginians rely on these programs every day and I will fight to protect the funding.
