But the trauma within ICE detention facilities is unseen, as individuals spend weeks, months, or longer without being reunited with family.
Threatened with deportation to countries they know nothing about. And ready to give up on their appeals, to avoid further detention.
And they described a lack of access to vital medical care, like insulin for diabetes.
We have all watched in horror as ICE has engaged in indiscriminate immigration raids, grabbing citizens and noncitizens alike, and often endangering the lives of our neighbors in the process.
Many of the people we met with had no criminal record and were showing up for immigration appointments when they were arrested by ICE.
They rarely get to see family members — who may live hundreds or thousands of miles away in the United States.
These are just some of the heartbreaking stories @padilla.senate.gov and I heard today at the California City Detention Center. 🧵
In just one year, Trump has abused his office at every turn. He has corruptly worked to enrich himself and his family, while doing nothing to help yours with the cost of living.
The fight to preserve our democracy isn’t over — it’s just getting started.
Spent a meaningful MLK Day with Angelenos at Big Sunday’s MLK Clothing Drive and Community Breakfast.
In 1967, MLK asked: “Where do we go from here, chaos or community?” We choose community.
Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His dream remains a call to action for all of us to continue the fight for justice, equality, and the right to vote.
The President’s betrayal of NATO is complete with this latest tariff threat.
It will only further alienate our allies, drive economic uncertainty, and raise costs.
Congress must act, and put a stop this self-destructive madness.

This week, people from all over California came to the Capitol to talk about food, nutrition, healthcare and a host of other issues.
@padilla.senate.gov and I are so grateful to hear from constituents of the Golden State on what we can do to help.
Our servicemembers and their families deserve better than a Congress that lacks the courage to debate the military actions Trump is taking around the globe.
With the help of the former isolationist, JD Vance, who cast the tie-breaking vote, Republicans in the Senate abdicated again.
Yet another failed attempt by the Trump administration to intimidate voters and undermine California's free and fair elections.

$2 billion in grants to help stem opioid addiction and address mental health issues cancelled, then swiftly reinstated.
Why the flip flop?
Because of public outcry. Keep speaking out. Your voice matters.

Why doesn’t anyone tell Donald Trump that invading Greenland is a harebrained idea?
The simple answer: He has surrounded himself with cowards and sycophants.
This is yet another wake up call to the American people of Donald Trump’s disdain for the Constitution.
Time and again, he has made it clear how little he cares for American democracy.

Donald Trump tried to withhold funding from California and other states on this basis in his first administration and lost.
Our state will continue to fight the administration whenever it threatens immigrant communities, or violates the law. apnews.com/article/trum...
Donald Trump is manufacturing and fomenting a crisis to justify another authoritarian overreach into American cities.
The Insurrection Act would be the latest in Trump's misuse of our military, and we cannot allow it. apnews.com/article/immi...
Senate Republicans just narrowly blocked consideration of the resolution to put a check on the President's military actions in Venezuela.
We will not give up. Congress must prevent our troops from being put in harm’s way to secure access to another country’s oil.
Personal lawsuits against media companies whose coverage offends the president, abuse of the regulatory process to censor the press, and now execution of warrants against journalists.
There has never been a more blatant attack on freedom of the press in our history.
