President Trump said we should be arrested, tried, and hanged for simply re-stating the law and making clear the military can refuse illegal orders. SecDef @PeteHegseth cheered him on and threatened a military investigation.
Coming from a manufacturing state in the Midwest, manufacturing is not like tech. It doesn’t live in the cloud — it’s tangible. And Michigan knows this business better than anybody.
If any uniformed military officer had done the same, he or she would be held accountable. Or more likely, they would simply have owned up to the additional risk they brought to their fellow service members. Secretary Hegseth should have taken accountability from the start. (3/4)
I just read the Signalgate report. The unclassified version will be released tomorrow for the American public to judge for themselves. The report reinforced what was already publicly known: @SecDef used a personal cell phone and an unclassified app to share sensitive operational information... (1/4)
As Michigan’s Senator, I have a special responsibility to stand up for our auto industry — including taking tough votes. Just five months into my time in the Senate, I had the opportunity to put my money where my mouth is.
Major Pete Hegseth, in 2016: "... that's why the military said it won't follow unlawful orders from their Commander in Chief. There’s a standard. There’s an ethos. Me in 2025: "You can refuse illegal orders." Watch for yourself.
Make this make sense. The President launches lethal strikes on transporters of cocaine, but then pardons Juan Orlando Hernández, a convicted cocaine kingpin. In mafia terms, it’s like going after the bagman while inviting the mob boss to dinner. PS: Ban the presidential pardon.
Since Signalgate back in the spring, Secretary Hegseth’s leadership has been a distraction from the critical missions of our military, and I called for him to resign then. The President himself yesterday told the country that he would not have wanted a second strike.
At the Pentagon, the buck stops with the Secretary of Defense. Period. True leaders own the calls they make and take responsibility for their actions. Sec. Hegseth should release the full video of the strike and lay out publicly what happened, without throwing the uniformed military under the bus.
The Governor appealed this decision, which the bipartisan federal delegation supported. But in October, the Administration denied the appeal. And this is the result. We all understand cost-cutting, but shorting communities that have gone through one-in-a-generation disaster isn’t the place to look.
The White House approved repairing roads and bridges, public buildings, and parks. But in a surprising move, they denied funding to reimburse our utilities. As you may remember, we had an enormous number of downed lines and polls, and our line workers did Herculean work to restore power.
