The law is unequivocal: All furloughed and essential federal workers must receive back pay in the event of a government shutdown.
It is a sick thing for Republicans to shut down the government and then stiff the people who work hard for the American people.
We all must continue working toward a return of the hostages, the delivery and distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza, an end to the war, and a region that can live in safety and peace.
Two years ago, Hamas launched a horrific attack on Israel. Today, we hold in our hearts the victims and pray for their loved ones.

🚨STARTING NOW: As we enter another week of Trump's shutdown, @alsobrooks.senate.gov and I are hosting a telephone town hall with Marylanders to discuss our fight to reopen the government and prevent a health care crisis in America.
Tune in: www.vanhollen.senate.gov/live
I’m fighting to lower Marylanders' health care costs.
Republicans want nothing to do with that. So they shut down the government.
Trump has been trying to shut down this government from the moment he took office.
Team Maryland will keep working for you.
We won't back up, and we won't back down.
Gmar Chatima Tova to all observing Yom Kippur in Maryland and throughout the world.
I am wishing you all a meaningful, peaceful, and easy fast.
Republicans control the White House, and they have majorities in the Senate and House.
And now, after Republicans wrecked our economy, they have to shut down the government.
It's cruel. It's callous. And it's incompetent.
Republicans have the keys to the kingdom.
The White House. The Senate. The House.
Tonight, they have used their power to shut down the government.
The American people, including our patriotic federal workers, will pay the price for Republicans' callousness and incompetence.
Thank you to the amazing women of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. for allowing me to speak with you all for your Congressional Day on the Hill.
In this season, we must lean on each other, fight for each other, and protect each other. And know, I will always fight for you.
Proud to join my friend Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth in introducing the Help FEDS Act. This legislation would ensure that if Republicans shut down the government, our civil servants - in Maryland and across the country - have financial support.
This Administration’s witch hunt against federal workers in this country is a stain that will stick to our country for generations to come.
Trump continues to attack them in his attempt to shut down the government.
Has life gotten better for you since Trump took office? Have costs gone down?
No.
That’s why Trump wants to shut down the government. That’s why Republicans refuse to negotiate. What they’re doing isn’t working, and they want hardworking Americans to pay the price.
Republicans control the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives. Trump wants to use his shutdown to fire MORE federal workers.
When people show you who they are, believe them.
I was so proud to join the Raising the Bar Conference to celebrate Workforce Development Month.
I repeated the wise words of Martin Luther King Jr., "Whenever you are engaged in work that serves humanity and is for the building of humanity, it has dignity, and it has worth."
I was honored to join the White Rose Foundation Inc. for the ribbon cutting of their new service center.
The White Rose Foundation Inc. continues to keep our community healthy, advocate for the elimination of health disparities, and protect our seniors and their health.
The Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC) is a world leader in agricultural research, a model of American exceptionalism, and a standard we can’t afford to lose.
The Trump Admin's attempt to close BARC is misguided and wrong. Team Maryland is committed to saving BARC.
This weekend, Comptroller Lierman, Councilwoman Porter, and I heard from scientific researchers about just how dire their situation is thanks to RFK Jr.
The cuts this Admin has made on things like cancer and Alzheimer’s research will have consequences for decades to come.
Once again, President Trump and RFK Jr. are abandoning science, spreading conspiracy theories, and betraying American families – especially mothers.
For the sake of the American people’s health and future, RFK Jr. must resign or be fired immediately.
