Maria Ellen Cantwell is an American politician serving as the junior U.S. senator from Washington since 2001. A member of the Democratic Party, she previously served in the Washington House of Representatives from 1987 to 1993 and in the United States House of Representatives from 1993 to 1995.

Today is #SpiritDay — a day to take a stand against bullying and show support for our #LGBTQ+ youth. Too many LGBTQ+ young people still face harassment at school. That is wrong and unacceptable, and it must end.

If enhanced premium tax credits aren’t extended, new costs will hit some seniors hard. A 60-year-old woman in Yakima County earning $41K/year with a husband on Medicare would see her annual health insurance costs skyrocket from $70 to $1,945.

I took few minutes with @momsrising.org the other day to get the word out: In 29 states, health insurance rates are projected to go up by more than 20%. If my Republican colleagues are serious about driving down health care costs, then let's protect ACA tax credits that are expiring.
Hopefully this critical breakthrough will be quickly followed by an immediate surge of humanitarian aid delivered by a multinational peacekeeping force and a genuine effort to find lasting and prosperous peace in the region through the acceptance of a durable and equitable two state solution. (2/2)
More than 70,000 King County residents receive enhanced premium tax credits to help them afford health insurance. If the credits aren’t extended, a couple earning $52K/year with an adult dependent son will see their annual health insurance cost skyrocket from $490 to $2,830.
We need to act right now. We need to say to families who are going to be threatened by this that we can work together and we have a plan.
Tony has stage-four thymic carcinoma. With the expanded ACA tax credits, he's been able to get life-saving care. Without them, his healthcare costs would jump & he'd have to drop his coverage altogether. While Democrats fight for families like his, Republicans chose to shut down the government.
God forbid that these people get sick or have a condition that is really life threatening, because people don't want to come up with a solution today. It is not that hard. We can extend these tax credits. We can have affordable health insurance in the market.

It includes two sections of data from a KFF Health Tracking Poll (September 23-29, 2025). On the left, blue circles illustrate that 7 in 10 of those who purchase their own insurance say they could not afford their coverage if premiums doubled. On the right, green circles show that about 4 in 10 Marketplace enrollees would go without health insurance coverage if premiums doubled.
Health insurance premiums for a single person will more than double on average next year if the enhanced premium tax credits expire. This will be on top of the rising prices Americans pay for household goods, gas prices, electricity, housing, and groceries.
We're very clear on our side of the aisle: ✅ We want the maximum amount of people to get health insurance. ✅ We want to drive down uncompensated care costs. ✅ We want to drive down health insurance premiums. ✅ And we want to deliver good health care for our citizens.
We already have price increases for a lot of household items. Now is not the time to put health care on the list and crush families with this extra burden. My colleagues should come to the table and say, “We agree. We need to fix this now.”
