I voted against the extreme Republicans' attempt to criminalize gender affirming care for transgender youth. Families & their doctors, not Republican members of Congress, should be able to make their own, private medical decisions.
House Republicans just voted to CRIMINALIZE providing medically-necessary healthcare for young trans people—threatening parents & doctors with a DECADE in prison. We urge our colleagues in the Senate to block this dangerously harmful bill!
“Equality Caucus condemns passage of trans youth healthcare criminalization bill.” IMAGE: U.S. Capitol under a dark, stormy sky, a red caduceus (staff with wings, two snakes) behind prison bars behind the Capitol dome.
“This bill is the most extreme anti-transgender legislation to ever pass through the House of Representatives and a direct attack on the rights of parents to work with their children and their doctors to provide them with the medical care they need. If this bill becomes law, doctors, pharmacists, and—in some circumstances—the parents of young trans people, would face time in prison for choosing to prioritize their child’s health. This bill is beyond cruel, and its passage will forever be a stain on the institution of the United States Congress. At a time where the federal government is already so hostile towards the transgender community, it is imperative that Senate Democrats hold the line to prevent this dangerous bill from reaching President Trump’s desk in order to protect the rights and safety of young trans people and their families." Rep. Mark Takano, Chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus.
Just as Trump‘s appointees gagged Kennedy Center board members, who opposed the outrageous and illegal renaming of this iconic institution for the “great leader,” his regime seeks to gag all who oppose its many other authoritarian actions. Only as more Americans engage can we stop the Trump tyranny.
The White House claims the vote to rename the Kennedy Center was “unanimous.” That is false. I was muted on the call and denied the opportunity to speak or register my opposition. That is not consensus. That is censorship.
Big Surprise—AG Pam Bondi is ignoring the law requiring her to turnover the complete Epstein files today. During the months that Trump and his errand runner, Speaker Johnson, have been making zealous efforts to block public disclosure, Bondi had ample time to prepare these documents for release.
As a Vice Chair of the @EqualityCaucus, I strongly oppose attacks against transgender individuals and will continue working hard to protect our LGBTQIA+ neighbors from these vicious efforts.
At the end of a long series of votes today, I missed the final vote on Crenshaw's misnamed Do No Harm in Medicaid Act, which would prohibit Medicaid from covering gender-affirming care for youth. I would have voted No, as I did when Republicans proposed this outrageous policy earlier in the year.
The self-styled, Republican “moderates,” who belatedly joined our petition to discharge a bill to extend the Affordable Care Act credits, stalled until it was too little too late.
Too many lies to count, including his attack on the Affordable Care Act on the same day a handful of GOP Congressmembers supported it. But I do agree with him that as to the Trump regime, there has “never been anything like it!”
Trump’s campaign rant tonight reminds me of a famous line from the old Marx Brothers comedy Duck Soup--"Believe me or believe your eyes?" He is clearly not buying groceries or other goods, made more costly by his tariff taxes.
He has no authority to declare war on his deplorable fellow authoritarian in Venezuela and no plan for the day after – which will likely be political chaos, economic shocks, and more migration.
Trump, who promised to keep us out of wars, is paving the way to send us right into another one. Too weak to stand up to the real threats to our security from Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, he distracts from his countless failures at home with deadly adventures abroad in Latin America.
Trump’s massive welfare program for his rural supporters will cover only a fraction of what they’ve lost from his chaotic tariff policies. His “Liberation Day” tariff taxes only liberated profits from farmers and other businesses and many dollars from consumer pocket-books.
After previously rejecting my amendment to maintain the tax credits that help millions of families afford ACA plans, Republicans shut down the government for weeks, and delayed all year. I spoke out today about the harm they are inflicting on our neighbors by replacing ObamaCare with NothingCare.
