This week, I met with the U.S. Conference of Mayors to discuss several of our bipartisan bills to mitigate our nation’s housing crisis.
As Mayor of San José, I banged my head against the federal “wall” enough to know that cities need a better federal partner to get more housing built–and sometimes, they just need to get federal rules out of the way.
Sense prevailed over stupidity by a 214-213 vote, and I’m grateful to four GOP colleagues who stood up to their leadership and said this is no way to govern. 2/2
This week, Congress should focus on lowering health insurance costs for families and keeping the government open. Instead, we’re debating political stunts to censure and remove colleagues from committees. 1/2

After we added 200 police officers to our force–and without any deployment of the National Guard–San José had the lowest homicide rate in the nation by 2022. Great to see Mayor Matt Mahan and San Jose PD continue the momentum to make San Jose America’s safest large city.

Congressional Democrats and Republicans don’t agree on a lot of housing policy, but we agree on enough solutions to find common ground. I’m working with Chairman Flood to find real solutions, because the only way we’ll solve this is by working together.
Today, we honor the nearly 3,000 who we lost on September 11, 2001. Amid the mourning, I will forever admire the tremendous courage shown by our first responders and those aboard Flight 93. America will never forget all who we lost, nor the resilience and unity that carried our nation forward.
Political violence is never acceptable.
I’m praying for Charlie Kirk’s recovery and thinking of his family.

Yesterday, I met Peter, a high school student from Menlo Park living with Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy. He traveled to DC with the Speak Foundation to advocate for stronger healthcare research funding and more resources for the disability community. I’m grateful for his advocacy.
We need an agency rededicated to its core purpose: ensuring every American has access to safe, affordable housing.
On HUD’s 60th anniversary, its mission has never been more urgent. The nationwide housing crisis is hitting hardest in the Bay Area, where reforms and increased investment at HUD could provide real relief.
What happened to ICE’s focus on violent criminals? Every American and lawful US resident faces growing risk of ICE detention under this flaccid interpretation of “reasonable suspicion.”
