@housedemocrats.bsky.social fought tirelessly to expose + oppose this bill at every turn. The American people deserve to understand what happened today: House Republicans deliberately chose their ultra-rich donors over the well-being and financial security of everyday Americans. My full statement:
‘The Ultimate Betrayal’: Pingree Condemns House Passage of Reconciliation Bill
With the narrow passage of this reckless bill, Republicans have brazenly chosen to sacrifice the health and economic security of working Americans to give massive handouts to billionaires and corporate interests. This legislation represents the ultimate betrayal of hardworking families across our nation.

This week, a nonpartisan analysis from the Congressional Budget Office confirmed what we’ve known all along: This GOP tax scam robs from those with the least to line the pockets of the wealthy. Billionaires and corporations reap substantial tax breaks, while everyday Americans foot the bill. The richest 10% will see their wealth grow, while the poorest 10% will see their budgets shrink even further. If it’s signed into law, it will represent the single largest transfer of wealth in U.S. history.
In Maine alone, around 400,000 people—including seniors in nursing homes, children, and working families without job-based health coverage—depend on Medicaid. This bill cruelly strips coverage from an estimated 50,000 Mainers, threatens the survival of health care providers like hospitals and nursing homes, and transfers enormous financial burdens onto our already strained state budget. Additionally, SNAP benefits—which provide a modest $2-per-meal lifeline to our veterans, seniors, and children—will be drastically gutted.

Republicans love to talk about reducing the deficit, yet this bill recklessly adds nearly $4 trillion to our national debt, jeopardizing bond markets, destabilizing our economy, and potentially triggering billions in cuts to Medicare.

My Democratic colleagues and I fought tirelessly to expose and oppose this bill at every turn, demanding transparency and accountability. The American people deserve to understand exactly what happened today: House Republicans deliberately chose their ultra-rich donors over the well-being and financial security of everyday Americans.
The CBO has weighed in on the Big Bad Billionaire Bill: If your income is in the bottom 10%? Tough! The top 10%? You’re cashing in! It'd be one of the largest transfers of wealth in U.S. history. Republicans are abandoning the people they claim to represent—just to make the rich even richer.
If Republicans pass this disastrous bill: 🚨 50,000 Mainers will get kicked off their health care. 🚨 Children in our state will go hungry. 🚨 The rich will get richer. 🚨 The poor will get poorer. 🚨 The deficit will grow by $4 trillion. No wonder they met in the middle of the night to finalize it.
I’m heartbroken by the passing of my good friend and colleague, Gerry Connolly. Gerry and I came to Congress together. He was a fighter, a hard worker, and cared deeply about the people he served. My thoughts are with his family, his staff, and all who knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed.
The Interior Department is supposed to protect our natural resources and cultural heritage.
Instead, it’s partnered with DOGE to cancel grants, fire employees, and abandon Tribal communities.
@democrats-appropriations.house.gov are calling on Sec. Burgum to uphold the department’s mission.
Time and again, this Administration has shown it’ll go to any length to deport people on a whim. No matter how illegal or inhumane their methods. Time and again, the courts have told it to follow the law. Enough. These charges must be dropped—and the Administration must follow the law. (3/3)
By law, members of Congress are allowed to inspect ICE facilities. It’s the definition of oversight. We don't need an appointment. We don't need the President’s approval. Rep. McIver was protecting her constituents. She was demanding answers. She was doing her job. We proudly stand by her. (2/3)
To suggest that supporting Tribal health and environmental safety—in this case, by studying PFAS contamination in their ancestral waters—is some kind of ‘radical agenda’ is both offensive and deeply ignorant. How many times do we have to make clear to this Administration that Tribes are not ‘DEI’?
In our @democrats-appropriations.house.gov EPA hearing last week, Administrator Zeldin acknowledged the importance of these grants and that this funding was already appropriated by Congress. So, either he was disingenuous with me and our Subcommittee, or he and his agency aren’t on the same page.
Thank you to the team at Goodwill of Northern New England—which oversees several amazing AmeriCorps initiatives that are now in jeopardy—for sharing these stories with us. Mainers deserve to know the human cost of these reckless cuts. (4/4)
Or the Mainer who drew on her experience living abroad to help New American entrepreneurs navigate the complexities of owning a business—and just had her funding rescinded. Sadly, we’re likely to hear many similar stories. These cuts are happening across the country. The impacts will be huge. (3/4)
When you start to hear the real human stories, the true costs of this callous decision really start to hit home. Like the 167 kids from Waldo County—many of whom have experienced poverty—who were able to participate in a wonderful 4H camp, thanks to an AmeriCorps program. Not anymore. (2/4)
🧵 The Administration hasn’t just proposed eliminating AmeriCorps; it’s taken the first step, abruptly canceling hundreds of millions of dollars in grant funding that supports critical volunteer programs across the country—including many here in Maine. (1/4)
People who say the Republicans' “big beautiful bill” (which includes massive tax cuts for the rich) will add trillions to the federal deficit: ✅ CBO ✅ CRFB ✅ The Joint Committee on Taxation ✅ Countless analysts People who say it won’t: 🔴 The Trump Administration Who should we believe?
REPORTER: Is the president okay with this bill adding to the deficit? LEAVITT: This bill does not add to the deficit
I’m so saddened to hear the news of President Biden's diagnosis. I also know what a fighter he is—and what an incredible community he has in his corner. To the President and his family: You have the love and support of millions behind you. We stand with you, hopeful for a swift and full recovery.
It's also a massive national security threat. Air Force One is essentially an airborne version of The White House. It would cost potentially billions of US taxpayer $ to secure + retrofit the plane so that it meets the rigorous requirements of Air Force One. Talk about "waste, fraud, and abuse."
The President’s claim that the jet was ‘free’ and therefore no big deal, is as laughable as it is delusional. Qatar is infamous for its human rights abuses + has known ties to several terrorist groups. At a time when the Administration is alienating allies, this is who they choose to cozy up with?
Maine congressional leaders slam Trump’s plan to accept $400 million plane from Qatar
