Hillary J. Scholten

Hillary Jeanne Scholten is an American politician and attorney who has served as the U.S. representative from Michigan's 3rd congressional district since 2023. She is the first woman to represent the district and the first Democrat to represent Grand Rapids in Congress since the 1970s. Before her election, Scholten worked as an attorney for the Department of Justice and in private practice. Her district, which was once represented by former President Gerald Ford, is based in Grand Rapids and much of the urban core of West Michigan.

I spoke with @acluofmichigan.bsky.social Executive Director Loren Khogali today about continued efforts to ensure West Michiganders’ rights are being protected – crucial work in our current chaotic political landscape. Thank you to everyone at the ACLU for the work you do to defend civil liberties.
Since I was young, participating in sports at all levels has shaped my life—giving me strength & confidence. This Girls and Women in Sports Day, we celebrate the trailblazing athletes of the past, present, and future.
Since FMLA passed on this day in 1993, we have yet to secure paid family and medical leave for all workers. Last Congress I was a proud cosponsor of the FAMILY Act, and I'll keep fighting so working Americans can care for themselves and their families with the support they deserve.
No one is left untouched by cancer. As the home to Medical Mile, West Michiganders are working to improve cancer outcomes and research the tools to help cure this disease every day. #WorldCancerDay
I joined Small Business Committee colleagues urging @sbagov.bsky.social to clarify the situation and provide answers to the American people. If there’s nothing to hide, these answers should be easy. We must protect American entrepreneurs. The first step is transparency.
Congrats to West Michigan's own GRR for breaking their passenger record of 4 million travelers in 2024! I had to stop by their celebration station today on my way to D.C. — keep soaring to new heights, GRR! 🛫
While President Trump has decided to pause the disastrous 25% tariffs on Canada for 30 days, the threat and instability loom large. Relations with our neighbors to the North are crucial for West Michigan’s economy—I’ll push back at every step the President tries to disrupt them.
On this day in 2023, East Palestine, OH was devastated by a train derailment and subsequent chemical disaster. With their community still recovering from this tragedy, we must keep pushing for environmental regulations to prevent tragedies like this and keep our communities safe.
It’s been 155 years since we ratified the 15th Amendment, where Black men were granted the right to vote. However, we know all too well that the fight for voting rights didn’t end there, and it’s our duty to continue expanding access to the ballot box for every American.
Caring for our beautiful outdoors is so essential to me because it’s personal to me and my family! Jesse and I washed away the stress of the week with some hearty cross country skiing on the North Country Trail! Nothing like some fresh air and my ❤️ to get me ready for the week ahead!
The EITC works hand-in-hand with the Child Tax Credit to support families in need. Thousands of Michigan’s kids have been lifted out of poverty thanks to the CTC. The recent expansion of the CTC will expire at the end of 2025, so I’m working hard to protect and expand it.
In 1975, President Ford signed the EITC into law as part of the Tax Reduction Act. Since then, the EITC has remained a lifeline for working families. Census data shows that in 2018, the EITC lifted 5.6 million people above the poverty line, including nearly 3 million children.
Since West Michigan’s own President Ford signed the Earned Income Tax Credit into law 50 years ago, it has helped millions of families rise above the poverty line. I was honored to celebrate its anniversary this weekend w/ United Way — now, let’s get into how the EITC keeps delivering for Americans.
Such a meaningful way to kick off Black History Month at the GIANT Awards to celebrate and honor local Black leaders. Let’s continue uplifting our community’s diversity — it’s what makes West Michigan great.
Thanks to Team Scholten’s hardworking caseworkers, families like Stephen N.’s can resolve issues with renewing or receiving new passports. If you find yourself struggling with a federal agency, don’t hesitate to reach out to my office at 616-451-8383.
Our country is a better place because of the contributions of Black Americans. This Black History Month, we honor and recognize the extraordinary achievements of Black Americans in every part of American life and culture, including right here in West Michigan.
Had such a great time at Love Cafe for lunch today! This new restaurant is pay-what-you-can, with fresh ingredients and job skill training at the heart of its mission — what an incredible addition to our community!
