With housing costs already rising, President Trump & HUD Secretary Turner are firing federal workers & dismantling HUD field offices that play a vital role in supporting federal housing programs across the country. Senator Padilla & I are leading 100+ Congressional Dems in condemning these efforts.
I was proud to join @justeconomy.bsky.social for their “Just Economy Conference” to talk about the invaluable impact of Community Development Financial Institutions and their work to support economic and housing development nationwide.
“The president is following a playbook from other countries whose leaders have sought to undermine democratic systems and the rule of law, including Russia, Turkey and Hungary.” Trump is implementing the authoritarian playbook here at home. We all must continue to push back.
President Donald Trump’s crackdown on lawyers is having a chilling effect on his opponents’ ability to defend themselves or challenge his actions in court, according to people who say they are struggling to find legal representation as a result of his challenges.
Gutting America’s public health system does nothing to make our nation safer or healthier. In fact, it does the exact opposite. It ensures that fewer cures are found, less treatment is available, and more Americans will die unnecessarily.
Breaking news: The Department of Health and Human Services is cutting nearly a quarter of its workforce and consolidating several of its departments, Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Thursday.
While states like Missouri are already facing a teacher shortage in many school districts, President Trump is asking the Supreme Court to freeze federal funding dedicated to training the next generation of teachers. SCOTUS must stop this action before it harms students in #MO05 and nationwide.
The Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court to freeze millions of dollars in grants to states intended to address teacher shortages cnn.it/3FFXr3L
In their rush to destroy anything related to pandemic public health—during outbreaks of measles and bird flu—the Trump Administration is also cutting critical research into treatments for cancer, HIV, mental health, and addiction. “The cuts are deep.”
NEWS: As HHS begins to pull billions from states health agencies and ~100 universities, pandemic preparedness efforts are getting axed. Also cut: —Millions for mental health/substance abuse care in most states —Grants to cancer centers —More HIV research www.notus.org/health-scien...
As all of us in Kansas City get excited for #OpeningDay, I hope @royals.com fans will take a moment to read this piece and reflect on how fortunate we are to have individuals like Bobby Witt Jr. and Patrick Mahomes representing our great city. Now, let’s go win another championship!
“Imagine being 14 years old and the expectation is to make the big leagues. Not the dream, the expectation….. I wanted so badly to be great. So I wanted to do whatever it took.” This is Bobby Witt Jr.’s journey, in his own words.
Whether you live in urban or rural America, SNAP plays an essential role in keeping families fed and communities strong. Tragically, President Trump and House Republicans are working to slash funding for SNAP to fund another tax cut for their billionaire donors.
I was proud to stand with National Rural Letter Carriers yesterday in the nation’s capital to continue the fight against privatization at the U.S. Postal Service. Together, we will protect this vital service for the families, workers, and communities who have depended on it for over 2 centuries.
At minimum, Secretary of Defense Hegseth and National Security Adviser Waltz should resign or be fired—and an investigation should commence immediately.
The information Hegseth disclosed on Signal was classified at the time he wrote it, especially because the operation had not even started yet, officials tell us. “It is safe to say that anybody in uniform would be court martialed for this,” a defense official said. www.cnn.com/politics/liv...
Congress must initiate immediate and thorough investigations into the worst national security breach in modern American history. Anything less disrespects the brave men and women who continue to serve in the U.S. military.
My staff and I were honored to meet with Harvesters to talk about their vital work to keep food on the table of Missouri families—and how cuts to SNAP will undermine food security across the region. Team Cleaver will always fight to protect nutrition programs for our neighbors.
In the United States of America, everyone deserves equal pay for equal work, period! This Equal Pay Day, I join the @demwomencaucus.bsky.social in fighting to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act to ensure women are paid fairly for their work they do. #EqualPay
Imagine putting in the same hours and the same effort, only to be handed a fraction of the paycheck. That’s the reality for women in America. We’re fighting for fair wages for all women. #EqualPay
With the blessing of President Trump, the richest man in the world has been allowed to fire essential staff at the Social Security Administration, defund phone services that seniors rely on, and close local SSA offices. They’re intentionally sabotaging Social Security.
Social Security in turmoil: — SSA website crashed four times in 10 days this month — Phone service a mess following Musk-led cuts — Agency no longer has a system to monitor customers’ experience due to DOGE — Major staff exodus www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
The danger with installing loyalists over qualified, nonpartisan experts is that the loyalists are typically very incompetent. Senate Republicans knew that a Fox News host leading the Department of Defense would endanger our troops and America’s national security—and they confirmed him anyway.
American war planning usually takes place in highly secure facilities. But the Trump administration planned its strikes on the Houthis using a group chat—and accidentally included The Atlantic’s editor in chief, @jeffreygoldberg.bsky.social. theatln.tc/AmsjsuT6
As the GOP defunds essential services at the Social Security Administration, President Trump and the GOP are now threatening to “shut down” the SSA, which will prevent seniors from getting the benefits that they earned through a lifetime of hard work. www.newsweek.com/social-secur...
“From layoffs at the Department of Veterans Affairs to a Pentagon purge of archives that documented diversity in the military, veterans have been acutely affected by Trump’s actions.” While Democrats are fighting to protect the jobs and benefits of veterans, the GOP is hanging them out to dry.
Congressional lawmakers are scrambling to formulate a response to President Donald Trump’s slashing of the federal government as one group takes a front and center role: military veterans.
The USPS is a vital public service that ensures seniors get their medications, small businesses can ship their products, and so much more. Yesterday, I joined NALC Branch 30 and local postal workers in KC to fight against efforts to privatize the Post Office. www.kmbc.com/article/usps...
