Though they were in Washington under tragic circumstances marking the third anniversary of Dobbs denial of rights, I welcomed Austinites Amanda Zurawski and Kaitlyn Kash, along with fellow abortion advocates Megan Bond, Sarah Hansen, and Sara Outterson. (1/2)
Working with Rep. Lloyd @Doggett.house.gov Dean of the Texas Congressional Delegation, and @RepEricSorensen.bsky.social, the only meteorologist in Congress, to call for immediate action from federal agencies following catastrophic flash flooding in Kerr County, Texas, that claimed over 100 lives.
We must learn from these failures in order to prevent more tragedies, and that learning must include a recognition that climate change-driven weather intensification means more and more dangers to our safety. (2/2)
Amid the pain and suffering so many Texans are facing from deadly flooding, Trump comes to Kerr County after undermining the federal response both before and after this avoidable catastrophe. So many lives lost that competent action at all levels of government could have prevented. (1/2)
Trump's the problem, not the solution: Cuts, hiring freeze on federal workers, withholding resilience funds, undermining FEMA effectiveness, spreading climate denial/repealing efforts. A Texas arrival doesn't make up for ongoing harm of his policies & the danger it poses for more weather disasters.
The Trump Administration, which has so little respect for democracy in America, is also abandoning it around the world. It plans to cut 99% of programs that supported courageous human rights activists fighting authoritarian rule. When tyrants go unchallenged, we all pay the price.
Effective oversight saves lives. It means not overlooking responsibility, wherever the hard questions take us. I discussed my efforts to ensure that whenever and wherever the next weather-related disaster occurs, we learn from failures that contributed to unacceptable losses from the Texas flood.
Donald Trump promised 90 deals in 90 days. He failed, just like he failed to drastically lower prices as he promised in January. The only thing Trump’s tariff taxes are liberating is more money from your wallets.
While focused on eliminating minority opportunity districts through the replacement of 4 of my Houston/Dallas colleagues, the GOP will swiftly begin gerrymandering to further Trump’s grip, with a likely redraw of the entire state. It is the latest power grab that citizens must rise up and resist.
Desperate to protect his obedient GOP majority’s lock on Congress, and anxious that many GOP will lose, Trump directed Gov. Abbott to find 3-5 new Texas Congressmembers through more crooked gerrymandering.
To save lives and prevent future tragedies, we need to ask hard questions. Trump Admin failed to respond to my concerns weeks ago about the impact of National Weather Service staff cuts/hiring freezes. I expanded my inquiry to ensure we know what happened July 3-4 before another disaster strikes.
Autocrats of the world, unite! Your morning cup of coffee is about to get more expensive – Brazil is our leading supplier of coffee – as Trump aims to protect a disgraced leader who similarly tried and failed to overturn a free and fair election.
With much pain and uncertainty in Texas, we need a full account of whether or not recent federal staff cuts/hiring freezes may have impacted National Weather Service operations during the deadly flooding. Although the Trump admin was unresponsive to my concerns in May, I'm again seeking answers.
Trump’s tariff taxes on goods we import have increased prices for working families. Consumer spending fell in May. Now, Samsung is reportedly delaying completion of its Taylor facility in Central Texas due to a lack of customers, as spending on consumer electronics and autos remains depressed. 1/2
For over 70 years, federal law has prevented tax-exempt charitable contributions from being funneled into political campaigns. I entirely agree with a former member of my team, Amanda Tyler. Wealthy campaign donors should not be allowed to turn churches into political action committees.
Statement from @amandatylerbjc.bsky.social on the IRS’s decision to allow churches to endorse candidates from the pulpit. You can read BJC’s full press release here: https://loom.ly/9-XtNyM #JohnsonAmendment #FaithFreedomForAll #EndChristianNationalism
We owe a duty to the flood victims and their families to fully understand what led to this inexcusable tragedy, as I discussed on CNN. Preventing future weather-related disasters means we must learn from mistakes, not dodge the hard questions.
We need to avoid deaths, not accountability for them. Continuing to make excuses, ignoring the steady drumbeat of climate warnings and worsening threats, will only lead to more disasters. (2/2)
Losing so many lives to flooding is inexcusable. While failures at every level of government appear to have contributed to this catastrophe, all seek to avoid accountability. As Chris Tomlinson explains, “Our leaders are willfully ignorant and intentionally unprepared.”
