In our nation's formative years, the backbone of federal infrastructure was built on the backs of enslaved African Americans, shaping landmarks like the White House. In 197 days, we will commemorate Slavery Remembrance Day (SRD) on August 20. #CountdownToSRD
By 1860, the economic value of enslaved people surpassed that of all U.S. railroads & factories combined - fueling America’s economy. Their labor forged industries that foster America’s modern wealth. 198 days to Aug. 20, Slavery Remembrance Day. #CountdownToSRD
African Americans’ labor was integral to America’s economic foundation. For more than two centuries, their labor was stolen and their lives sacrificed. They are America’s economic foundational mothers and fathers. 199 days to Aug.20, Slavery Remembrance Day. #CountdownToSRD
Happy Black History Month! This month we celebrate the strength, resilience, & monumental achievements of Black communities. This year’s theme highlights the history of African Americans & Labor. In 200 days, we will commemorate Slavery Remembrance Day on Aug. 20. #CountDowntoSRD
Today, in 1865, the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery was passed. As we reflect on this significant event, let's remember the fight against slavery advanced through courageous action. In 201 days, we’ll commemorate Slavery Remembrance Day (SRD) on Aug. 20. #CountDownToSRD
In 202 days, on Aug. 20th we will observe Slavery Remembrance Day (SRD). The 14th Amendment helped dismantle slavery by granting citizenship & equal rights to all people born in the United States. We cannot turn back the clock to an era of inequality & oppression. #CountDowntoSRD
My deepest condolences to the grieving families of the 67 victims in the tragic plane-helicopter collision at Reagan National Airport. Thank you to first responders for their swift actions. This loss is felt by all of America.
In 203 days, we will observe Slavery Remembrance Day (SRD) on Aug. 20th. As we remember all victims of crimes against humanity, let’s not forget to honor the lives sacrificed to slavery, a great crime against humanity. Let’s ensure such horrors are never repeated. #CountDowntoSRD
On June 11, 2024, the House passed H.R.537 to honor the heroes of the Holocaust with a Congressional Gold Medal which I supported. Why didn’t the same Congress pass H.R.1244 to honor the enslaved given that Congress in 1956 awarded a Congressional Gold Medal to honor confederate soldiers?
I support having the horrors of the Holocaust taught in public schools to help prevent it from ever happening again. I also support having the horrors of slavery taught in public schools to prevent it from ever happening again. Both are unspeakable crimes against humanity.
On this International Holocaust Remembrance Day, let us not forget the unspeakable horrors the Jewish people suffered - let us also ask why the horrors of 246 years of slavery in America is not commemorated. Both were unspeakable crimes against humanity.
On this International Holocaust Remembrance Day, I honor the memory of the approx. six million Jewish people murdered by Nazi Germany. We must not forget that the Holocaust was a result of an ideology of hatred & dehumanization. We must never allow these horrors to be repeated.
