[i'm sorry to people who make games who follow me and quinns, when i talk about mid games i'm obviously talking about other people's games, not yours]

think the reason why games hit differently here is because the mid games still scratch the bad itch — "oh cool here is an engine i can compulsively engage with, checking off goals until an extrinsic reward is granted". and then I wonder why i feel a bit hollow. hm!

hm. I think the difference is that playing a mid game feels like a lot more work, and/or tickles the part of my brain that enjoys unhealthy compulsive behaviours without tickling the part of my brain that is consuming art

constantly playing mid metroidvanias because i think i like them but i don’t i just like hollow knight. constantly playing mid im sims because no-one’s matched deus ex. constantly playing mid deduction games because obra dinn is flawless
realised the other day that about 95% of my time spent gaming is going “wow I had a transcendental experience with [perfect game] let’s play things like it” and just having a mid time
