Recently, Pope Leo reminded the world of a question from the Gospel of Matthew that cuts to the heart of this moment: How did you treat the foreigner? That question reaches beyond any one faith. It speaks to our shared humanity and our responsibility to act.
ICE has terrorized communities while evading real oversight and accountability, and the American people overwhelmingly reject this abuse of power. All people deserve to live in safety and dignity, free from fear and violence at the hands of their own government.
Today, every Democratic senator voted NO on adding $10 billion more to ICE’s budget. I voted NO on funding for ICE and will continue to oppose any additional funding for an agency that operates with brutality, lawlessness, and impunity.
Veterans who survive rape or incest deserve care, not barriers, and doctors should never be silenced when patients are seeking medical guidance. The VA must deliver consistent, comprehensive care to all veterans — guided by medical need and science, not extremist and dangerous ideology.
That is why I am leading my Democratic colleagues in introducing a joint resolution of disapproval under the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to formally overturn the VA's recently finalized abortion rule. This resolution makes it clear that this dangerous policy cannot stand.
The Trump administration’s extreme abortion ban puts veterans at risk and prevents doctors from providing the care their patients need. House Democrats believe veterans deserve compassionate, comprehensive health care and honest conversations with their doctors — free from political interference.
At a time when antisemitism is rising and hate is once again being normalized, the lessons of the Holocaust demand more than remembrance. They demand vigilance, moral courage, and a refusal to remain silent in the face of injustice.
On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we join people around the world in honoring the memory of the six million Jews and the millions of other innocent lives murdered during the Holocaust. We remember the families destroyed, the communities erased, and the humanity that was denied.
ICE must immediately cease its lawless operations in Minnesota and in communities across the country. This administration must be held fully accountable, and DHS must be forced to operate with responsibility, transparency, and respect for the rule of law.
Here at home in Ventura County and the Conejo Valley, and in communities across the country, we stand united with the people of Minnesota and with all who are demanding accountability, real oversight, and an immediate end to the abuses that have terrorized communities and cost lives.
This is not isolated. It is part of an aggressive pattern of enforcement that has inflamed communities and provoked peaceful resistance in cities across the country. The Trump administration’s efforts to justify these actions with lies only deepen the anger felt by so many.
What is happening in Minneapolis is an affront to core American values and must be condemned. In recent weeks, two individuals have been fatally shot by federal agents during these operations, sparking grief, protest, and widespread calls for accountability nationwide.
