It’s time for Speaker Johnson to do his job, swear in Representative-elect Grijalva, and bring House Republicans back to Washington to negotiate in good faith a funding bill that protects Americans’ access to affordable health care.
Many are now questioning his motives, including whether he’s delaying the swearing-in to prevent a full House vote on releasing the Epstein files. Whatever his reasoning, it’s an abuse of power that denies representation and transparency to the American people.
Going directly against precedent – where two House Republicans were sworn in less than 24 hours after their special elections, even during pro forma sessions – Speaker Johnson is refusing to seat our new Democratic colleague.
It’s Day 8 of the Republican shutdown. Speaker Mike Johnson isn’t just canceling votes to avoid a bipartisan funding deal, he’s exploiting the shutdown to delay swearing in Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva, who won her election in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District nearly two weeks ago.
Once Grijalva is sworn in, the House will have the 218 votes needed to force a vote on releasing the Epstein files.
Speaker Johnson is deliberately depriving Grijalva’s constituents of representation, leading many of us to speculate that his actual motive is to further the Trump administration’s Epstein cover-up.

And in case he forgot – he’s the Speaker of the House. He has the power to call the House back into session at any time. He’s choosing not to.
Speaker Johnson isn’t right about most things, but he’s right about one: it’s quiet in the House of Representatives. Quiet because he canceled votes and handed House Republicans a three-week paid vacation while millions of Americans deal with the consequences of their government shutdown.
We are at a decisive moment in global history, a crossroads that will define how we are remembered by future generations. All human life has value, and we must uphold the basic rights and human dignity of every person, everywhere.
The cycle of violence must end, and a lasting peace must be built on safety, security, dignity, and self determination for both Israelis and Palestinians.
It is imperative that Israel work with the international community to ensure that critical humanitarian assistance reaches civilians in Gaza and that every possible step is taken to protect innocent lives.
Hamas’s brutal actions not only brought unimaginable pain to the people of Israel, but also deepened the suffering of the Palestinian people, who have endured tremendous loss and hardship throughout this conflict.
I also recognize the profound and devastating toll this war has taken on the Palestinian people. More than 65,000 Palestinians have been tragically and senselessly killed, and countless others have been displaced, injured, or face starvation and immense hardship.
I join the international community in mourning the innocent lives lost on October 7, and I continue to call for the safe and immediate return of every hostage still held in Gaza.
Today marks two years since the horrific terrorist attack perpetrated by Hamas that killed 1,195 people and took 251 innocent people hostage, including 12 Americans.
Speaker Johnson canceled votes again this week – handing House Republicans not one, not two, but three weeks of paid vacation instead of doing their jobs.
Democrats are ready to work, ready to negotiate, and ready to reopen the government. House Republicans just need to show up.
