A few quick charts. First, the big picture: Overall consumer prices were up 2.9 percent from a year earlier. Over the past three months, prices have risen at a 3.5 percent annual rate.

U.S. consumer prices rose 0.4 percent in August and were up 2.9 percent from a year earlier. "Core" prices, excluding food and energy, rose 0.3 percent from a month earlier and 3.1 percent year-over-year. #NumbersDay
