imo Twitter’s issues started before Musk took over.
But Musk’s leadership has destroyed much beyond recognition, potentially past the point of no return.
The ad issue isn’t “root of all evil,” but it’s a very specific model - a newspaper model - which is different than a more communicative one
I think when the business model is shaped by and results in billionaires, it inherently is both a biz problem and a leadership problem. Also a system problem
But agreed that while tech is important, the biggest issues aren’t necessarily technological. It’s about the decisions that shape the tech
I’m really not sure. I don’t think we’ve seen an incentive model for more communicative sharing yet.
Most platforms are on an ad model. Personal interactions and meaningful engagement don’t really make money for them - distribution does.

Yes, that’s a good point. For users with larger audiences it has become utterly unusable, but I can see it retaining different functionality at different platform sizes
Another impact of the downfall of Twitter / FB is the fragmentation of media.
There are a lot of problems with overly centralized media. But now smaller competitors are less local/indy news and more punditry and propaganda outlets.
Opinions shape one’s “facts” more than facts shape one’s opinions

The way platforms make money determines how spaces are incentivized. We’ve seen how ad spend incentive has impacted many platforms. But that’s not the only one
& if ppl can subscribe to diff algos there’s a potential for siloing that could prevent that broad sampling of convo.

I’ve been in the crucible enough times to develop an instinct for what resonance feels like (even if it’s not in your favor). You can tell it’s so off.
They have broken the infrastructure for 2 way conversation. It’s just one-way communication and pile ons now. Billboards and crashes. A real shame.
One thing about the bird app’s platform getting totally gamed and manipulated is that where it once was a place for people and decisionmakers to actually try to follow public conversation, it now no longer has that value.
The metrics and engagement are very contrived now.It’s basic purpose is gone
