A lot of what happened in Twitter was the right claiming they had disproportionate suspensions & bans due to “political bias.” From the research, there’s no evidence for that. Accts were banned for breaking the rules. But the right’s “working the refs”got platforms to skew their algos to boost them
A core element of right wing harassment campaigns is politicizing parts of community culture in order to “work the refs” into making a place more dangerous. They do this to media as well. Ex: they cast not harassing people as a “leftist value” and then claim political persecution when banned for it
Both. The invite tree accountability makes people more judicious about bringing in solid people, the early suspensions of bad accounts increased trust/confidence about commitment to safety, and the smaller community feels safer too. I do get nervous for #s going up & harassment campaigns starting
Does it feel safer and more fun because of the product itself or because our community is still relatively small so we feel safer to share thoughts? (I dun have an answer)
Late night, daytime talk, news comedy (ex. the daily show, last week tonight, the problem w/ JS) and this one is a little weird but what about official podcasts connected to TV shows? If there’s anything else good to know, best practices, etc I’m all ears!
Heard on the news front. I also get requests for other types of shows and appearances, just wanted to check. I remember late night show antics were a thing back during the ‘07 strike
💯 I also think there are many pols (often mod) from more insulated, privileged areas that genuinely believe certain things cannot happen in the US and refuse to believe when it does. They tie themselves into knots to avoid the clearest explanation. It’s “Trump is secretly playing 4D chess” syndrome
Yes. We pushed for it to be included in HR1. A lot of Dems pushed back. If you want to know what your member thinks about it, you need to ask them specifically. The best time to get a candidate to commit to a position is during a primary. Especially if it’s their first one or a competitive one
Do you think it would reduce lobby influence to have publicly funded elections? And is there any interest from Congress in doing something like that?
Yep. Fwiw I spend a lot of time in committee w/ she-who-shall-not-be-named & I think she’s a true believer. I def had a moment in cmte where was like “Wow. I actually have to work in the same room as a white supremacist. Every day.” The idea they’re “pretending” is very naive for many reasons imo
Human behavior. Politicians have to deal with humans as they are, including culturally and politically. Academics often show/suggest where to go, pols need to figure out how to get there. That’s messy. Also a lot of pols aren’t very data-driven. They have other priorities, predispositions,& grudges
A combination of a lot of research and spontaneity. That for me is a winning formula. Research and prep makes you well grounded and confident, spontaneity electrifies the moment. If you’re too rehearsed it falls flat, but if you’re making everything up without prep you’re gonna make an🍑 of yourself
Electorally: municipal and hyper local elections. What’s happening in Tennessee and Montana is waking people up and the energy is a big moment to harness and propel forward Non electorally: labor + tenant organizing, enviro justice, worker co-ops are great areas to organize people & build structure
You don’t have to choose. I think in general people put too much focus on making a career rather than building a life. What you do is not limited solely to how you make money. You can do both. You can do each at different times. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. This is a time to be brave
