Austin's air traffic control tower is operating with LESS THAN HALF the required number of certified air traffic controllers. It's unacceptable, and I continue to push FAA to prioritize our airport for more hiring recruits and transfers to ensure our skies are safe during this busy summer season.
Trump and Rubio’s firing of over 1,300 State Dept employees weakens America & empowers China and Russia. With the Human Rights Bureau hollowed, this Admin is greenlighting authoritarians. Diplomats who ably served our country & helped keep us safe from wars, terrorism, and conflict deserve better.
Fighting crooked gerrymandering is not about protecting congressional seats, it is about protecting democracy. At Trump’s request, Republicans are trying to pick their voters instead of letting voters pick their leaders. apnews.com/article/trum...
Firearms are the leading cause of death for kids, yet Texas Republicans and Gov. Abbott banned red-flag laws—measures that let Courts temporarily remove guns from those at risk of harming themselves or others. Three years after Uvalde, the GOP still sides with NRA lobbyists over kids’ lives.
Great to see Romi, Jenny & Chelsea from the Alzheimer’s Association. Important discussion on the urgent need to restore medical research funding that is bringing innovative early detection tests and treatments to give loved ones more time with their family members afflicted by this dreaded disease.
The Trump admin blocked over $3.5 million in already congressionally approved funds to Texas AmeriCorps partners. That means Texans aren't getting the support they need for healthcare, education, disaster relief, and more. Together with Texas colleagues, I'm demanding answers.
Republicans' Big Ugly Bill is a real setback for our country, taking from working Americans to give to the richest few. Spoke to @velshimsnbc.bsky.social about how Trump and Republicans are paying for billionaire tax breaks by raising costs on health insurance premiums, electric rates, and more.
With an authoritarian president at home and so many troubling conflicts abroad, this Commission offers me another forum for engaging with its mission of democracy promotion, international cooperation, and peaceful conflict resolution. (2/2)
Honored to represent our vibrant international city in a new way through my appointment to the U.S. Helsinki Commission, an international organization founded upon the defense of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Together with Rep. McBath and other Democratic colleagues, we are demanding answers from the Office of Management and Budget over its delay of nearly $7 billion in K-12 funding. Our underfunded public schools can't afford more staff cuts or delays in essential student services; they deserve better.
Their heartbreaking stories of how their lives were endangered at the very time they learned they would lose a baby are added reason to continue our struggle for the Women’s Health Protection Act to #RestoreRoe and improve access everywhere. (2/2)
Though they were in Washington under tragic circumstances marking the third anniversary of Dobbs denial of rights, I welcomed Austinites Amanda Zurawski and Kaitlyn Kash, along with fellow abortion advocates Megan Bond, Sarah Hansen, and Sara Outterson. (1/2)
Working with Rep. Lloyd @Doggett.house.gov Dean of the Texas Congressional Delegation, and @RepEricSorensen.bsky.social, the only meteorologist in Congress, to call for immediate action from federal agencies following catastrophic flash flooding in Kerr County, Texas, that claimed over 100 lives.
We must learn from these failures in order to prevent more tragedies, and that learning must include a recognition that climate change-driven weather intensification means more and more dangers to our safety. (2/2)
Amid the pain and suffering so many Texans are facing from deadly flooding, Trump comes to Kerr County after undermining the federal response both before and after this avoidable catastrophe. So many lives lost that competent action at all levels of government could have prevented. (1/2)
Trump's the problem, not the solution: Cuts, hiring freeze on federal workers, withholding resilience funds, undermining FEMA effectiveness, spreading climate denial/repealing efforts. A Texas arrival doesn't make up for ongoing harm of his policies & the danger it poses for more weather disasters.
The Trump Administration, which has so little respect for democracy in America, is also abandoning it around the world. It plans to cut 99% of programs that supported courageous human rights activists fighting authoritarian rule. When tyrants go unchallenged, we all pay the price.
