UPDATE: The President has signed 5 of my bills & 2 bills that I co-led, into law as part of this year’s annual defense bill. I came to Congress wanting to join the Armed Services Committee for this reason: it’s one of the few places in Congress that still works together to collaborate & legislate.

It is the privilege of my lifetime to represent you all in #MD03 and while it’s been a chaotic and challenging year for so many, my team and I were laser-focused on how we can support you all on your hardest days. Here’s what the first year in our office looked like:
As Congress considered serious issues of military readiness and resilience, I worked with @vanhollen.senate.gov and @alsobrooks.senate.gov to prohibit the construction of a second golf course that does not get us any closer to either of these goals.
Having represented and worked closely with both the U.S. Naval Academy and surrounding communities for years, it is clear that a second golf course at environmentally-sensitive Greenbury Point is not mission critical or in service to our nation’s defense.
We had the largest applicant pool of any freshman office for the Congressional App Challenge - and there were tons of incredible submissions from across the District - so thank you to everyone who applied.
I’ve worked on this issue in the State Senate, I’ve written to UCSG leadership condemning this policy before, and I am once again calling for this policy to be revoked to make it clear to our servicemembers that hate has no home here.
Despite the acting commandant of the Coast Guard issuing a lawful order stating the Coast Guard outright banning hateful symbols like swastikas and nooses, the USCG has quietly downgraded the definition of swastikas and nooses from overt hate symbols to “potentially divisive.”
I had the chance to tour their 1st Helicopter Squadron, meet with base leadership and hear directly from enlisted servicemembers about critical quality of life issues, and learn more about the Defense Innovation Unit’s efforts to strengthen our national security.
We are almost wrapped with our state-wide military installation tour! This week, I visited Joint Base Andrews with @hoyer.house.gov, which is home to multiple Air Force, Navy, and Space Force units and provides security for the President and other government officials.
Thank you to the Jewish Federation of Annapolis & the Chesapeake for organizing a lovely Chanukah celebration. After the horrific events of the weekend, it was so important to be with our Jewish neighbors and commit to spreading light, love, and acceptance after this moment of darkness.
