speccing out an alarm system for my new house and hate the fact that this implicitly involves selecting which ~smart home ecosystem~ I will be forced to painfully extricate myself from in a decade's time
Creative destruction baby! An unproductive firm can survive in the good times but in the bad times it goes under

I avoided Home Assistant for the longest time for being a UI mess and this isn't helping my impression of it
lots of great insights here but one thing that did catch my eye is that Polanski is the only party leader who people would rather see as a junior partner in a coalition with Starmer
Wonder which response they consider a failure though
DEFCON opened with an exhortation to follow the 321 rule: three hours of sleep, two meals and one shower a day

The Friends episode where Joey reads Little Women has as its initial premise the idea that he only reads Stephen King novels not classics
They’re doing “only white people are British” again
Oh my god they’re doing British food _again_

A heck of a chart: in every single one of the 10 major US cities that built the most housing between 2017 and 2023, rents for older, existing units fell—often by quite a bit.
"I want to write about the end of consensus reality" was the pitch, I think. Oh well! Sure it'll be fine
missed the fifth anniversary of this piece which is I think one of the most prescient I've worked on
my mental definition of inner/outer london is always along these lines really – if the primary way of getting somewhere is down, are the alternatives almost as good
I'm too inner london! the hackney downs/central interchange would be the way to do it without buses but it's specifically hateful for this particular interchange because it requires five lifts and a chunky walk to get from w/b mildmay to n/b weaver
of course anything bus reliant means I can't rely on a pushchair, because then I can't get on the bus if there's two other parents on it, so the 15 minute walk actually has to be "wait for a second bus"
No but I can walk for 15 minutes and then catch the 97 bus for "half an hour" which is always an hour given traffic
as someone currently trying to work out how to transport a 2 year-old from inner london to Stow proper: yes it bloody is
new yorkers (morning), is the staten island railway "a subway"?
[i fear the answer is ‘oh no the light rail on staten island run by the department of subways using subway rolling stock with a subway fare schedule is actually a distinct rapid transit service’]
