Bad laughter feeds on itself. Contempt for art or perspectives that feel alien thirsts for validation from the people next to you. I get the argument that we're all entitled to our own reactions, but actually, no. Not when they're so loud and performative that they cut into the experience of others.
To the justifiable discourse about how the repertory cinema experience is degraded by the smirky laughter of filmgoers who don't know how to process their own discomfort, all I can add is that if you're in a theater with a group of college kids who have been ASSIGNED to see a movie, brace yourself.>
I put this through Google Translate and it said, "The stock market dropped and I have no meaningful support for this anywhere so, basically, I lost, and nobody should ask me about this anymore."
Trump: "Based upon a very productive meeting I had with Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one... Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs"
Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
"Snubbed." JFC. I cannot believe that my years spent dissecting the single stupidest part of Oscar-nomination culture is going to qualify me as an expert on how World War III started.
Mike Johnson accuses Norway of “making a political decision & not awarding the Nobel Prize to probably the most deserving individual in history of the prize. There are 8 to 10 wars & conflicts that’ve been resolved by President Trump, & he got snubbed.” (Vid via Manu Raju on X)
If Schumer were ONLY the party's midterm strategist--and if he managed a win--many Democrats would grit their teeth and say, I don't like him but he got us the majority. But he's also the Senator who should be mobilizing opposition re ICE and Greenland. And it is cataclysmic to fail in that duty.
One problem Democrats face is that the job of chief electoral strategist (Schumer) is increasingly incompatible with being party leader (also Schumer). Both roles matter, but if you can't use your platform as leader to say what's right because you're too into the game, you don't belong in the job. >
We have an entire class of Democratic "leadership" that has been told that it's dangerous and extreme to say this, and that does not understand that what Democrats want is for their leaders to articulate what they believe and why they believe it. That should not be as big an ask as it apparently is.
Mamdani: "I am in support of abolishing ICE. What we see is an entity that has no interest in fulfilling its stated reason to exist. We're seeing a government agency that is supposed to be enforcing some kind of immigration law, but instead what it's doing is terrorizing people."
This is what happens when you succumb to the pervasiveness of "It's cringe" culture--the idea that you cannot possibly live with discomfort without expressing audible hostility.
My honest belief is that they have both fallen so in love with their image of themselves as master election strategists that they have forgotten that they were elected to represent people and to argue for and against things. Also, thanks for your brilliant writing!
When I try to reply to a gmail now, I get an automatic "Do you need help writing?" cue. No, I do not, and kindly fuck off into the sun. Is there a way to turn this off?
Yeah, we all know: To win in '28, Democrats need a handful of voters they didn't get in '24. But the truth is that they don't need to be MAGA voters, and any Democrat perceived to be chasing them is going to be rejected by the left AND center of the party. It's never too soon to fight this nonsense.
Go find, if you can, 100 Trump voters who are "horrified"--not dismayed or concerned, horrified--at ICE. And then we can have an honest discussion about the 100 other concessions it would take to overcome their "skepticism" about Democrats. And about everyone you'd lose by giving into them. >
Losing my mind at the Dems with their billionaire backers and powerful friends who have come up with the brilliant strategy that the party should adopt the policy positions of the avg MAGA voter — apparently ignoring that independents and swing voters even exist. Is this what $40 million gets you??
This is a good thread to read. I will only add that I do not get ANY social-media notifications or news alerts on my phone and it is a foundational building block of my sanity that no nonhuman entity, not even Bluesky, gets to initiate conversations with me.
That's how I'm going to approach social media going forward. I'll get on it when I want to sit down at a computer and physically go to a website, or when I have to use it for work during work hours, but it's not going to be in my pocket notifying me of every single DM, like or reply instantly. 6/
The moment when his bestie finally gets suspicious was my favorite reality competition moment in twenty years. I don't want to say Shakespearean but I'm thinking it.
