But the movie complicates the path to its finish line admirably, and the four actors keep it idiosyncratic and specific all the way through. This will be on Netflix and honestly, I think that'll be a great way to watch it.
Day 7 of #NYFF64: Lee Chang-Dong's Possible Love goes deep and long in its portrait of two contemporary South Korean couples, one wealthy, the other pulverized by what people here like to call late capitalism and its cruel ramifications. Is their unlikely friendship going to end badly? Well, yeah. >
The movie has an MVP who it would be wrong to identify but we'll get there after it's been open for a bit. (Don't reply with a name; be cool!) For me, against stiff competition, this was the highlight of #NYFF64 so far.
Just came from Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim's You Can See Everything, and, well, uh...OH MY GOD. You will do yourselves a huge kindness if you read nothing more before you see it--with as big an audience as possible so that you can ride the waves of laughs, suspense, shock, and joy as one.
...it's both gentle and extremely tough. One reason we go to movies is to see timeless things explored in completely new ways. The last third of Everytime does that, with a daring and even alienating leap into something I won't spoil. I left knowing I had seen something I'd never seen before.
Day 6 of #NYFF64: I was flat-out stunned by Sandra Wollner's Everytime (this year's German Oscar submission). In a way that's slightly reminiscent of Aftersun (same cinematographer), it explores the disorientation and non-linearity of grief after a devastating family loss. It doesn't wring tears...>
There was a very interesting moment during a group cast interview when Sinbad got pissed off and broke through with some truth. It's in the story, but if I had been a more experienced writer, I think I would have known enough to make more of it. Anyway, Different World fans, I hope you enjoy it.
Since A Different World has been rebooted, I'm going to share something from deep, deep in the archives at the risk of embarrassment. 35 years ago, Entertainment Weekly decided to do a cover story on the original series. They sent...me. (File that under "Normal for 1991, not for 2026.") >
I was just typing something about the new Japanese movie All of a Sudden, and a little bubble popped up next to it saying "Concision: 'Suddenly' would be a better way to say this." If I could make the program that did this scream and beg for mercy, I would do it and sleep just fine tonight.
These people are utter garbage.
If you want to really know how the outrage machine gets fired up: 1. Schmitt plans to drop “bombshell” on Smith 2. Someone plants story that Schmitt is a Vance VP contender to run same day 3. Right-wing Twittersphere gets talking points 4. Schmitt steps in it 5. Scheduled tweets go out anyway
I think the problem is that it wants to be both an allegory and a depiction of a situation that’s SO specific that it’s just kind of a curiosity without (for me) much resonance. But I also think it’s a movie you buy into or you don’t. I wish I could have.
..rewritten for tragedy. In Prelude, Lucas used it effectively as an AIDS metaphor; here, it's more an allegory about trans identity. But just saying "It truly sucks to be in the wrong body" is not the same as thinking through a viable metaphor and then making it work in a narrative. For me, a miss.
Day 5 of #NYFF64: Sooner or later at any fest, you hit an "I don't get it" movie. I had a rough time with Arthur Harari's The Unknown, a long, moody drama about a mini-epidemic of people who unwillingly switch bodies after sex. It's basically Craig Lucas's excellent 1988 play Prelude to a Kiss... >
Related: I will never get over the placement of the parentheses in the title Birdman, Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). That is real. It made it all the way to the poster. We all saw a movie called Birdman, Or.
