The flip side of that is having a public/media that can maturely handle mistakes. The price of authenticity is public flaws. People say they don’t like inauthenticity, but mistakes are effectively weaponized in politics. Inauthentic, sanitized personas can be a defense mechanism, among other things
Think about what people/communities whose opinion you *do* care about. You can even write them down and draw a circle around it. When you focus on the opinions you do respect, it devalues the noise. That said I’m not going to pretend stuff doesn’t get to me!But the scale it requires is much bigger
💯 Politics is both electoral and non-electoral (I’m looking for a better term than that). Change requires both. People interested in electoral work also don’t need to run for office. There’s field, comms, etc. There are shockingly few women/poc/lgbt+/working class campaign managers, & we need them
💯. One of the biggest mistakes I see w/ campaigns is they make it too much about the candidate. It’s counterintuitive bc campaigns in a literal + functional sense are about electing a candidate to office. But the best campaigns aren’t really abt the candidate - they organize ppl to a bigger mission
One example of my boundaries when I first ran was “I need to be me.” In politics it’s common and acceptable to edit yourself and appear a certain way for electability. I personally can’t do that, it makes me unhappy. So I needed to win as me, or not at all. Guided and shaped a lot of decisions.
1. Sit down and really think about what your non-negotiables/boundaries are. Know your “why” 2. Be strategic about the seat. Could be very local or higher up, but consider the politics and the commitment (not all are full-time!). 3. Ruth Messinger’s advice to me: “Grow Rino skin” & knock doors!!
Imo it wasn’t a bad feature, but it’s been getting worse & more biased as of late (as are a lot of things over there). I think it’s important that the threshold of what gets checked is high (ex. clearly incorrect / harmfully lacking context). If it’s too low, then people just keep fighting more
Yeah honestly it came down to time (I have none) and similarity to 🐦. The Mastodon server thing sounded like something I needed to convene my team for a rec on. This took no time & the similarity to the bird app means I don’t have to learn a new UI That said, I’m not opposed to joining Mastodon!
Imo, yes. One caveat is that many gov and public service accounts (at least at the fed level) require a platform assessment prior to joining, which likely require more safety features than are currently available (ex: 2FA) It’s a bit early for now, but depending on how things grow it could happen!
Should we try to get these types of alerts that have real utility over here? @aoc.bsky.social https://fortune.com/2023/04/27/new-york-mta-twitter-service-alerts-elon-musk/amp/
