This is exactly right. Spider-Man exists outside the Marvel phenomenon (whatever remains of it) the same way that, to a lesser (in terms of box office) extent, Batman exists outside of the DC phenomenon (whatever remains of it).

I am completely unqualified to judge Emily Wilson's translation as a translation, but it is extraordinarily accessible and readable, and both the 100 pages of intro material and the end notes (you can dip in and out of them) are so inviting and reader-friendly they feel like a private tutorial.
I finished reading The Odyssey last night. It was somehow not on any syllabus in high school or college, and I avoided it for decades, assuming that you couldn't just read it but that it had to be taught to you. Very belatedly, I'm here to report that you can read it! It teaches itself to you. >
I have been alternately reading and listening to Emily Wilson's Odyssey translation. The audiobook is read (beautifully) by Claire Danes, but if you play it at 1.2x, she somehow becomes Claire Danes in Homeland.

I live in a neighborhood where people still aren't sure that "Avenue of the Americas" is going to stick.
To be clear, no writer on pop culture gave me, as a young reader, a greater education in how to develop an engaging argumentative voice--one's own voice, not an imitation. I still think about her pieces all the time, although not as holy writ. So that was written with love. Mostly.
So many parallels: Advances followed by brutal backlashes. Hatred cloaked in concern about "fairness" and "undue influence" on children. Insistence that it's a medical/mental problem. Rage at cultural institutions that "promote a lifestyle." Invective about "special rights." Malevolent statehouses.
And I gather Oh, Mary! is taking the same approach.
Reminder: Bernie Moreno dismissed women as "single-issue voters" on abortion during his 2024 run and said it was "crazy" that women over 50 think about it at all. It's sweet that he has opportunistically discovered empathy for his daughter and granddaughter. He should ask them what gender they are.
For sure, because it feels like if they can figure out a way not to pay actors for this, they will.
Overall, I think it could have all kinds of unanticipated effects, but I wonder if there's a financial structure that could be put in place that might make a path to profitability easier for some of these $25 million musicals that can't get in the black even after 2-3 years.
Financially, it looks like movies &/or proshots usually boost a show if it's still running. (Horrible/hilarious story: Someone in Wicked told me that after the 1st film opened, they got huge enthusiastic audiences--and then big walkouts at intermission bc people didn't want the next movie spoiled.)>
I wish Pauline Kael were around to say that she doesn't know anyone who saw Spider-Man and then make some sidelong comment about how all superhero movies are for homosexual men and then write that Zendaya's "fizzy pop nihilism" or something is the best thing in the film.

That said, don't overlook a much smaller but significant box-office phenomenon: The proshot of Hadestown grossing $18 million--more than Hamilton made--feels like a very clear and positive statement about the viability of these straight-from-the-stage special events. Expect more.
The Spider-Man box-office is...how do you even talk about a $350M US opening ? For a movie starring a guy who also has a major role in the country's #2 movie, which has grossed $400M in 3 weeks? To quote Olivia Colman's Oscar speech, I kind of hope you're watching, this is not gonna happen again.
Believe me, I get it.
