One interesting lesson of the show's success for me: Queer culture can get ahead of its consumers and decide that some big, monolithically defined version of "we" have all moved past stories about coming out, embracing our identity, figuring out what being gay means. Clearly, "we" have not.
Just finished Heated Rivalry. What has happened with this show in the last few weeks is just wild and FAST. True surprise hits are so rare. Do these two guys even understand that they're stars now?

Anyway, I now feel The Shining is a very great, very strange movie that is profoundly its own creature, and I really do get Stephen King's antipathy toward it because it all but sneers at his psychological humanism. I love the novel as well, but it and the film were just destined not to be friends.
It took me many years & rewatches of Kubrick films to grasp that though his work is largely adaptations, Kubrick has no allegiance to source material. He relates to it as inspiration, but also feels he owes it nothing. That's why so many of us who loved the novel (inc. me) hated The Shining in 1980.
It's a heartwarming story about family! For the Torrances, there is ALWAYS room at the inn.
Although I would be remiss not to tell you to check out this month's Queersighted selections. Judy Garland! Margaret Hamilton! Elizabeth Taylor x 2! Hepburn x 2 (Audrey and Katharine! Shirley MacLaine! Lucille Ball! You can't go wrong.
Guests kissed goodbye, dishes done, stomachs full, Criterion Channel selection made. In this household, The Shining is a Christmas movie.
